Team USA Blog: Reporting Live from Oshawa

Reporting live for the Red, White and Blue, this is Sarah and Holly. We are excited to share our "insider look" of what it's like to be a member of Team USA at the 2013 Women's World Cup in Oshawa, Ontario!

We arrived here in Oshawa on Sunday evening after an eventful few days of training camp in Buffalo, NY. There we fine-tuned our offensive and defensive sets, crushed our last two-a-day practice session, and had some fun along the way. Most importantly, on Friday we celebrated Head Coach Ricky Fried's birthday with a fantastic dinner along the Niagara River; we revisited the river on Sunday, finishing our time in Buffalo with a ride on the Whirlpool Jet Boat. It was an adventure-filled hour, where we learned the history of Niagara Falls, and got soaked as we navigated the class 5 rapids and Captain Alicia's "Hamilton Turns" (think 360 in a boat in 1.5 seconds). All in all, we left Buffalo confident that we had taken the next step forward in our preparation to earn the gold.

Our ride from Buffalo to Canada, believe it or not, was a defining moment of the trip for us. If you haven't seen Pitch Perfect, add it to your summer "to do" list, and put it at the top! Watching the movie inspired spontaneous bus "riff-offs," and the first "Acca-lax" we have ever seen. The songs from the movie have become staples on our pre-practice playlists. We are also loving Avicii's song "Wake Me Up," which gets us through our over the river and through the woods walk to the practice field here at Durham University.

After a final "friendly" against Team Japan yesterday, we are counting the minutes until our first game against England tomorrow night. Adding to our excitement, our coaches showed a surprise inspiring video from the legendary Coach K, sharing his experiences on what it meant to represent the United States, and wishing us the best of luck on our journey. On top of that, we watched the documentary "Dare to Dream" about the U.S. Women's Soccer Program. Their actions and example has defined and inspired a new generation of female athletes, and we hope to do the same.

This evening's Opening Ceremonies provide the official kick off to the World Cup, and we are praying the rain holds, as we are set to wear white linen pants!!

After four years of hard work and preparation, this group is so honored to uphold the tradition of USA Lacrosse and represent our country. Playing in the 2009 World Cup showed us that we will have to fight for every inch we get. There is no doubt our team is ready for the challenge. LET THE GAMES BEGIN!

Stars & Stripes forever,

Holly & Sarah
