Buczek: Big Red Excited for Matchup with Terps

Connor Buczek

Hey everyone! It's been a week filled with a wide range of emotions for our team in Ithaca. We experienced disappointment and anxiety following an overtime loss to Ivy foe Princeton on Schoellkopf Field last Friday in the Ivy League tournament semifinals. Without an automatic qualification, we had to anxiously await our tournament fate to be announced on the Selection Show Sunday night. After receiving our bid to the NCAA Tournament, we were filled with great excitement and anticipation of our first-round game against the Maryland Terrapins this Sunday in College Park, Md.

We have been hard at work preparing for our matchup against the Terps, as well as preparing for our final exams that we've had throughout the week. In addition to that, we have had some time for a little community service work and time to continue improving our team bond.

A few weeks ago, we hosted our annual Clinic For A Cause on Schoellkopf Field. Ross Gillum (midfield, #43) does a great job spearheading our philanthropy programs, and came through for us again when he set up our clinic. The team always enjoys having the opportunity to host the local youth lacrosse players for a day, as it is filled with fun and games. The clinic gives us a chance to interact with some of the exuberant young Cornell lacrosse fans, and the opportunity to teach some lacrosse lessons in the process. The clinic ended with a pizza party and some autograph signing for the young studs. Proceeds from the clinic benefit the Dream Factory of CNY, which grants wishes to critically and chronically ill children in the local area.

As I mentioned, since classes have ended we have had a little more time than usual to spend as a team. Throughout the week, many of us have spent time watching the NHL playoffs, playing some Mario Party on Nintendo 64, or just relaxing and enjoying each other's company. We spent Friday night together at a team dinner hosted by Coach DeLuca and his family then caught a showing of Iron Man 3. The night was a treat for all of us as Coach D manned the grill and provided a great meal for the team in the beautiful Ithaca weather.

At this point in the season we realize that every game has the possibility of being our last together. We have 16 seniors that we need to send out on the right note, and I know that none of us are ready to end the year just yet. We're looking forward to an exciting game Sunday, with the opportunity of earning another week to play together. Tune into the game Sunday at 1 p.m. on ESPN2 and check back in a few weeks for another update on the team. Thanks for reading!
