Virginia Midfielder Walrath Faces Felony Assault Charge
Virginia midfielder Carl Walrath is facing a felony assault charge and three misdemeanors in connection with an early morning fight last month in Charlottesville, Va.
Walrath, 21, is charged with assaulting a police officer and faces other charges of resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and public intoxication, according to local media reports from Charlottesville.
Police say as many as 10 people were involved in a fight around 2 a.m. on Nov. 24 on University Avenue on the Corner, an area of bars, restaurants and stores across from the Virginia campus. Police ordered the group to stop and Walrath was the lone person to not obey, a police spokesperson told the Charlottesville Newsplex. Walrath punched an officer in the face and fled on foot. He was later found, arrested and released on bond, according to the report.
Walrath is due in court in January. An update on his status on the team was not immediately available.
The junior midfielder from The Haverford School (Pa.) appeared in nine games last season, registering one point, and at times ran on Virginia's second midfield line.
