500 Quest: Hofstra Shoots for Milestone Again

from press release

- The eighth-ranked Hofstra Pride return to action Tuesday night, March 30 when they attempt to get the 500th victory in program history when they host the Black Knights of Army at James. M. Shuart Stadium. Game time is 7 p.m.

The Pride, who are coming off an 11-9 loss at Massachusetts in their CAA opener in Amherst last Saturday, are ranked eighth this week in both the USILA Coaches Poll and Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll. Hofstra was ranked sixth last week.

In Saturday's game, the Pride, playing without junior Jay Card, who sat out with an ankle injury, battled back from a six-goal deficit in the second half to get within two but could get no closer. Sophomore Kevin Ford, who made his 2010 debut after breaking his foot in January for the second time in four months, led the Pride with three goals and one assist. Junior Stephen Bentz and sophomore Brad Loizeaux each added two goals and one assist in the loss.

Hofstra, which has tallied 79 goals in six games this year to rank seventh in the country, is led by junior attackman Jamie Lincoln, who leads the nation in points per game with a 5.33 mark on 18 goals and 14 assists in six games. He had a goal and an assist at UMass last Saturday. Bentz, another attackman, has tallied a career-best 15 goals and six assists while Card, who is expected back for the Army contest, has added 11 goals and nine assists. Freshman goalie Rob Bellairs has recorded a 4-2 record and a 9.12 goals against average this season.

Tuesday night against Army, Hofstra will be looking to become just the 14th Division I member to record 500 victories in the history of its men's lacrosse program. Other schools that have reached the milestone include: Johns Hopkins (896); Syracuse (798); Navy (744); Hobart (722); Maryland (709); Army (708); Cornell (673); Princeton (647); Rutgers (557); Virginia (554); Harvard (538); Yale (536), and Lehigh (518).

The Black Knights of Army come into the Hofstra game with a 3-4 record and riding a two-game winning streak. Army is coming off a 9-5 victory at Lehigh on March 23. The Cadets also have victories over VMI (11-9) and Rutgers (11-8) and have dropped decisions to Bryant (7-6), at Syracuse (12-7), at Cornell (12-11 in OT) and at Air Force (8-7 in OT). Tuesday's game is the 54th meeting between Hofstra and Army in a series that began in 1955. Army leads the series 37-16 but Hofstra has won nine of the last 10 meetings, including a 9-8 double-overtime win at West Point last season.

Army is led by junior attackman Jeremy Boltus, who has tallied 13 goals and 20 assists. Freshman Garret Thul has added 18 goals and four assists while senior Tyler Seymour has chipped in with nine goals and three assists. Junior goalie Thomas Palesky has recorded an 8.59 goals against average and a .570 save percentage in seven games this season.
