Georgetown Snaps Mount's Five-Game Win Streak

from press release

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Goalkeeper T.C. DiBartolo (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) made 20 saves, but it was not enough as Mount St. Mary's fell to No. 11 Georgetown, 11-6, on Wednesday night.  The Mount trailed 6-5 midway through the third quarter, but the Hoyas scored the next three goals and held on for the win.

Bryant Schmidt (Great Mills, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) and Cody Lehrer (Baltimore, Md./Dulaney) each scored twice for the Mount, which saw its five-game win streak snapped.

DiBartolo played a strong first quarter, making six saves while allowing just one goal for the Mountaineers (5-3).  The Hoyas held a 14-to-5 advantage in shots in the opening quarter of play with Andrew Brancaccio providing the Georgetown goal.

Georgetown's Davey Emala gave the Hoyas a 2-0 lead with 9:45 left in the first half on a pass from Ryan Shuler.  The Mount answered right back with a Lehrer score into a wide-open net on a feed from Andrew Scalley 45 seconds later.  Georgetown's Jason McFadden restored a two-goal lead with 1:33 left in the first half to give the Hoyas a 3-1 lead at the break.

The Hoyas (6-3) outshot the Mount, 26-to-9, in the opening half and held an 11-8 edge in ground balls.  DiBartolo posted 10 saves to keep the Mount in the game.

The scoring picked up in the third quarter as the teams combined for nine goals.  The Hoyas stretched the lead to 4-1 on a Shuler goal 4:04 into the second half, but the Mount countered with two scores in a span of 32 seconds.  Sophomore Bryant Schmidt scored an unassisted goal 31 seconds after the Shuler score to cut the gap to 4-2 before Eric Ososki (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) struck 31 seconds later to make the score 4-3.

Georgetown was able to push the margin back to three with goals by Ricky Mirabito and Zach Angel.  Mirabito picked up a loose ball right in front of the cage with 5:36 left in the quarter before Angel score just under a minute later to make the score 6-3.  The Mount again answered right back on Lehrer's second goal of the game on a pass from Mike Adkins.

Jake Willertz (Severn, Md./Mount St. Joseph) followed with his first score of the game when he buried a shot to the upper right corner of the cage to cut the Hoya lead to 6-5.  Imala and Brancaccio each scored to counter the Mount run to send the Hoyas to the fourth quarter with an 8-5 advantage.

Georgetown's Brennan Bicknese converted an Emala pass 33 seconds into the fourth to give Georgetown its biggest lead of the game, 9-5.  Bryant Schmidt posted his second goal of the game with 8:15 left to cut the deficit to 9-6.

Georgetown closed out the game with goals from Mirabito and Emala for the final margin of 11-6.

Georgetown outshot the Mount, 52-18, in the game and held a 36-to-25 advantage in ground balls.  The Mount's Ben Trapp (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) won 11-of-21 face-offs and picked up a team-high nine ground balls.

The Mount returns to action on Saturday, April 10, with a 1:00 p.m. Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at Detroit.

Game Notes:  Georgetown has won 12 in a row vs. the Mount and holds an 12-3 lead in the all-time series since the Mount moved to NCAA Division I in 1989.
