Jaspers Clamp Down on Marist in Second Half

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist men’s lacrosse team led 5-4 at halftime Wednesday night against the Manhattan Jaspers at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field, but managed only one goal in the second half to lose 10-6. Senior midfield Bob von Hoffman (Montclair, N.J.) led the Red Foxes with two points on a goal and an assist as six different Marist players scored goals.

Marist (8-5, 5-2 MAAC Lacrosse League) got on the board first as von Hoffman scored at the 11:12 mark of the first quarter. Manhattan (7-7, 5-2 MAAC) answered with 8:03 to go in the first as Tyler Sabens found the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1. The Red Foxes took the lead back with 3:33 remaining in the first as Corey Zindel (Randolph, N.J.) fed Connor Rice (Penfield, N.Y.) for his 30th goal of the season, giving Marist a 2-1 lead. The Jaspers then tied the game 2-2 1:07 later on a Sal Perrotto goal.

Manhattan took its first lead of the game with 8:47 to go in the second quarter. Justin Jensen scored man-up off of a Sabens assist to put the Jaspers ahead 3-2. Ryan Sharkey (Westfield, N.J.) tied the game 3-3 at the 6:27 mark when he put an Aedan Herman (Stafford, Va.) feed past Manhattan goalie Jon Fiorillo. Mike McLachlan (Norwalk, Conn.) then put Marist ahead 4-3 with his lone goal of the game, coming with 4:14 to go in the half. The lead grew to two when von Hoffman found Matt Teichmann (Huntington, N.Y.) for his goal, giving the Red Foxes a 5-3 lead with 2:31 remaining in the half. The Jaspers cut the lead to one before halftime, as Sal Perrotto scored with 31 seconds left to make the score 5-4.

Manhattan then took control of the game in the third quarter. The Jaspers tied the game 5-5 at the 8:55 on James Synowiez’s first goal of the game. Sabens then put Manhattan ahead 6-5 with 2:15 to go in the third quarter. Marist had four extra-man opportunites in the quarter, but could not score on four shots. Synowiez scored his second goal with 10:11 to go in the fourth quarter, putting Manhattan ahead 7-5. Jensen then scored back-to-back goals to give the Jaspers a 9-5 lead with 5:26 to go in the game, putting the game out of reach. Manhattan outshot Marist 16-11 in the second half, forcing eight Red Fox turnovers.

The Jaspers outshot Marist for the game 33-28. Marist held a 28-22 advantage in ground balls. Sam Altiero (Randolph, N.J.) made 11 saves in goal for Marist, with Fiorillo making nine saves for Manhattan. Synowiez and Jensen led the Jaspers with three goals apiece. Sabens had two goals and three assists for a game-high five points.
