Adams Nets Record Seven in Detroit Victory
from press release
PONTIAC, Mich. -- Freshman Shayne Adams (St.
Catharines, ON/Denis Morris) led nine Titan goal scorers with a
school record seven goals as the Detroit men’s lacrosse team
picked up its first win of the season, 19-3, over Mercer at
Ultimate Soccer Arenas in Pontiac.
The 19 goals scored by the Titans (1-4) was a school record as well as the three markers allowed. Mercer, in its first year as a Division I program, fell to 0-5 on the season.
The seven points by Adams also tied a school record for the most points in a game in school history as the rookie attacker netted at least one goal in every quarter on the day. Freshman Alex Maini (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) netted a hat trick with three goals, while junior Scott Harris (Saline, MI/Saline) and sophomore Chris Nemes (Novi, MI/Detroit Catholic Central) tallied two apiece.
Sophomore Jordan Houtby (St. Catharines, ON/Holy Cross Secondary) also set a Titan record with 11 ground balls, while tying his own school record for the second time this season causing six turnovers.
The Titans took a commanding lead right from the start with six goals in the first 11 minutes of play. All six goals were scored by two Titans as Adams and Maini picked up hat tricks in the first quarter.
Mercer ended the first period with two goals, but Detroit put the game away with six-straight goals in the second to jump out in front 12-2. The quarter started with sophomore Brandon Davenport (Grosse Pointe Woods, MI/GP North) winning the face-off, where he was 7-4 on the day, and eventually firing one past the Bears’ goalie.
Nemes and Harris would then go on the offensive with each Titan adding a pair of goals, before Adams struck for his fourth of the game with 22 seconds left in the half.
The Bears ended the second quarter with a goal with five seconds left, but that would be the last time they found the back of the net as the red, white and blue kept Mercer off the scoreboard in the second half.
Detroit added to its lead in the third with Adams on the man-up goal and then redshirt freshman Wes Steen (Columbus, OH/Olentangy Liberty) posted his first collegiate goal to give UDM a 14-3 lead after three.
The fourth saw senior Tim Shoemaker (Rochester, MI/Rochester) come up with his second collegiate goal and that was followed by Adams’ Detroit record sixth goal of the contest and the first on the day off the stick of senior Matt Gregson (Flint, MI/Powers Catholic). Adams got his seventh at the 7:52 mark in the fourth and freshman Matt Lining (Troy, MI/Troy Athens) ended the contest beating the keeper with 6:40 left in the game.
All three Titan goalies saw time in net led by sophomore A.J. Levell (Columbus, OH/Dublin Scioto),who picked up his third career win stopping two shots in 30 minutes of action. Freshman Danny Kransberger (Grand Rapids, MI/Forest Hills Central) had six saves in 28:06, while junior Mike Brown (Troy, MI/Troy Athens) made his collegiate debut recording a save in almost two minutes of game time.
Also picking up points on the day was junior Ty Maruyama (Lakewood, CO/Green Mountain), who had two assists and three ground balls. Harris added two assists to go with his two goals for four points in the game, while Maini totaled a four-point game as well with his helper added to his three goals.
Detroit set a school record outshooting Mercer, 51-26. The Titans also picked up 38 GB’s to the Bears’ 22 and forced the opposition into 29 turnovers. UDM also kept Mercer in check on the man-up advantage holding the Bears to 0-of-7 with the extra man attack.
The Titans will return to action next Sunday, March 6, in a lacrosse doubleheader at Titan Field. First the women will take on UC Davis at 11:00 a.m., and that will be followed with the men hosting Lehigh at 2:00 p.m.
