Towson's Hughes Earns Colonial Accolades

from press release

– Sophomore attackman Matt Hughes (Central Bucks East H.S./Doylestown, Pa.) of Towson University has been named as the co-winner of the Colonial Athletic Association Men's Lacrosse Player of the Week award for the week ending March 20, it has been announced by CAA officials.

It is the first time Hughes has been honored by the CAA in his career. He shared the award with Penn State freshman goalkeeper Austin Kaut, who helped the Nittany Lions defeat 10th-ranked Massachusetts by an 8-7 margin on Saturday afternoon.

"Matt came through with some terrific goals for us when we needed him on Saturday," Towson Coach Tony Seaman said. "He was a very important part of our win over Stony Brook."

The Tigers' leading scorer with 10 goals and 3 assists, Hughes recorded a pair of three-goal games as the Tigers split their two games last week. After scoring three goals in the Tigers' 14-11 loss against Navy on Tuesday night, Hughes added three more goals, including the eventual game-winner with 9:50 remaining in regulation, to lead Towson to a 9-8 victory over fifth-ranked Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon. It was the Tigers' first win over a top five opponent since April 27, 1996, a 13-12 victory over fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins at Homewood Field.

Hughes, who scored 13 goals with 4 assists as a freshman, has scored nine of his 10 goals in the last four games. He also had a "hat trick" in the Tigers' 11-3 victory over Mount St. Mary's on March 5.

Now 2-4 on the season, Hughes and the Tigers will open their Colonial Athletic Association schedule on Saturday afternoon when they travel to the University of Delaware for a 1 p.m. game against the defending CAA champion Blue Hens. The game will be broadcast on WTMD-FM 89.7 with Spiro Morekas, '83 and Greg LaCour, '81 providing the play-by-play.
