UD GK Fossner Named CAA Player of Week

from press release

RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Delaware senior goalkeeper Noah Fossner, who keyed the Blue Hens' comeback 8-7 victory over Colonial Athletic Association rival Towson on Saturday, earned CAA Men's Lacrosse Player of the Week honors announced Monday afternoon.

Fossner, a co-captain and health and physical education major from Niskayuna, N.Y. (Niskayuna High School), becomes the first Blue Hen to earn CAA honors this season and picks up the award for the first time in his career.

After struggling in the opening quarter in Saturday's key matchup vs. Towson when he allowed five goals in the first 11 minutes of action, Fossner made a complete turnaround the rest of the way as he held the Tigers to just single goals in the second and fourth quarters to pick up the victory and help the Hens post their second straight CAA comeback victory.

The third-year starting netminder posted 11 saves on the day while also contributing two groundballs and one caused turnovers.

A second team All-CAA selection who was the 2010 CAA Tournament Most Valuable Player, Fossner has been solid in the nets this season, allowing 9.20 goals per game and posting a .520 save percentage.

It was also a special day for Fossner in another way Saturday as led the way as Delaware took part in Cancer Awareness Day. Fossner, who lost his mother, Elaine, to cancer last spring, designed a t-shirt that the team wore in pre-game warm-ups and was sold to supporters the week of the game and on gameday. The t-shirt represented the fight against all forms of cancer that have affected the day-to-day lives of so many. Nearly $2,000 was raised and will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

Delaware (6-3, 2-0 CAA), which moved up to No. 18 in both the USILA and Inside Lacrosse Top 20 polls announced Monday, will head to Philadelphia this Saturday to take on host Drexel at 1 p.m. The Hens have defeated seven straight CAA opponents since last season, including a pair of
victories over the Dragons.

In addition to Fossner, also honored by the CAA as Rookie of the Week was Hofstra attackman Torin Varn. Varn, a native of Ithaca, N.Y., scored two goals in Hofstra's 11-6 win over Hofstra Saturday as the Pride bounced back from their 8-7 setback to Delaware on Mar. 19.
