Cornell Clobbers Canisius; No. 1 Virginia Next

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The No. 3 Cornell men's lacrosse team scored the first five goals of the game against Canisius on Tuesday and never looked back, routing the visiting Golden Griffins 19-4 at Schoellkopf Field.

Connor English had a game-high and career-high five points, the Big Red won 11 of 14 first-half faceoffs and seven different Big Red players scored two goals as Cornell sailed to the victory. The season-high 19 Cornell goals came from 12 different players, and five Big Red athletes earned assists.

Cornell outshot Canisius 50-16 over the course of the game, averaging nearly one shot per minute. Ahead 11-1 in halftime thanks to five first-period goals and six second-period goals, Cornell was able to give playing time to most of its roster in the second half.

The Big Red did not allow a goal in the second period, and goalkeepers Andrew West and AJ Fiore only needed to combine for five saves. Cornell forced 21 Golden Griffins turnovers and picked up 39 ground balls to Canisius' 20.

The Big Red's next contest will be against Virginia on Saturday in Baltimore. The Cavaliers are the nation's top-ranked team.
