No. 7 Bucknell Jumps All Over Holy Cross Early

from press release

LEWISBURG, Pa. — Four different Bucknell players recorded hat tricks and two others dished out four assists, leading the No. 6/7 Bison to a one-sided 16-9 win over Holy Cross in a Patriot League men's lacrosse game on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. The Bison raced out to an 11-2 halftime lead and improved to 9-2 overall and 3-0 in the Patriot League.

Freshman attackman Sean Doyle, back in the lineup after missing the last two games with an injury, registered four goals and an assist. Todd Heritage also scored four times, and Chase Bailey and Brock Ghelfi hit the back of the net three times each. David Dickson, who entered the game ranked third nationally in assists per game, tacked on four more helpers, and Peter Burke dished out a career-high four assists, with three of them going to Heritage.

Holy Cross' day was highlighted by two goals from freshman goalie Michael Ortlieb, both of them rolling into empty nets against Bucknell's 10-man ride. John Hannan and Conor Shanahan also scored twice for the Crusaders, who are now 5-5 overall and 1-3 in the Patriot League.

Just under two minutes into the game, Ghelfi lost his defender with a quick change of direction, freeing him up for an open shot from about 15 yards out on the left wing that gave the Bison an early 1-0 lead. The first of three Burke-to-Heritage plays made it 2-0 before Holy Cross even had the ball in a settled situation.

The Crusaders pulled one back on a nice dodge and shot from Hannan, but the Bison would score the next four in a row to take control of the game. Burke slipped a nice feed across the goal mouth to Heritage for a layup and a 3-1 lead. Doyle raced in from behind the goal to make it 4-1, and Ghelfi and Ryan Joseph finished the run with a pair of scores just 47 seconds apart. The Bison thought they had a seventh goal on an EMO, but Bailey had a toe just inside the crease and his goal was wiped out with four minutes left in the opening quarter. The Crusaders took advantage, as Shanahan scored at the other end after the turnover.

The second quarter was all Bison, as they outshot Holy Cross 12-3 and outscored them 5-0. Dickson assisted on each of the first three goals of the period, spreading the ball around to Bailey, Heritage and Doyle. Heritage and Ghelfi finished off the first-half scoring.

Holy Cross scored three of the first five goals of the second half before Bailey scored the goal of the day. Ortlieb made a nice save on Heritage's low drive, but Bailey jumped on the loose ball just outside the crease and scored with a behind-the-back shot to give the Bison a commanding 14-5 lead.

Bucknell outshot Holy Cross 30-8 in the first half and 52-20 in the game. The Bison also dominated in ground balls 41-18 and won 18 of 28 faceoffs. Ryan Gutowski was 7-for-10 in the first half before getting the rest of the game off, and Gavin Sullivan won 9 of 13. Gutowski and Sullivan led the team with four ground balls each.

The Bison defense forced 15 turnovers, with Jackson Place causing three and Mike Huffner and Alex Spring two each.

Thomas Flibotte scored his 26th goal of the season and also recorded his first career assist.

The Bison were coming off an 11-3 loss to 16th-ranked Penn State on Tuesday, but they bounced back in a big way against Holy Cross, hitting the 16-goal mark for the third time this season. Bucknell is now 23-0 all-time against Holy Cross, which had a winning record this late in the season for the first time since 1987.

Bucknell is now set up for a challenging finish to the regular season. The Bison will visit Army next week, host Lehigh on Apr. 12 and close the season at Colgate on Apr. 20. All four of those teams are well-positioned to make the four-team Patriot League Tournament, so seeding and hosting rights will be on the line.
