Cornell Rounds Out Coaching Staff with Kiekebelt

from Press Release

ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell interim head coach Matt Kerwich has announced that MJ Kiekebelt will join the Big Red staff for the 2014 season. Kiekebelt comes to East Hill after spending two seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater RIT. With the Big Red, Kiekebelt will work primarily with the face-off and defensive midfield units, while assisting on both ends of the field and running the substitution box on game day.

"We are looking forward to having MJ join the Big Red staff," said Kerwick. "He comes from an outstanding program at RIT where he played a key role in their run to the National Championship game last spring. An accomplished competitor and leader, he gained a wealth of knowledge working with a great staff at RIT. Additionally, his knowledge of the recruiting landscape, especially in Canada, will be a great addition to our efforts."

Kiekebelt joined the Tigers coaching staff after a highly successful playing career that culminated in being named the Empire 8 Men's Lacrosse Player of the Year and leading RIT to the NCAA Division III national semifinals in 2011. A long-stick midfielder, he was the first defender in conference history to earn Player of the Year honors. He was a two-time All-American, a three-time first-team All-Empire 8 selection and finished his career ranked sixth in RIT history with 338 ground balls, to go along with 162 caused turnovers and 38 points on 21 goals and 17 assists.

As a senior, he led RIT to a 19-1 record and the school's first Empire 8 title with team-highs in ground balls (131) and caused turnovers (57), while scoring eight goals and registering 12 assists.

A native of Caledon, Ont., Kiekebelt graduated from RIT with a bachelor's of science degree in business administration in 2011.
