Varn Nets Career-High Six as Hofstra Beats Marist

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Senior Torin Varn recorded a career-high six goals and two assists to help lead the Hofstra Pride to a 15-10 win over the Red Foxes of Marist at James M. Shuart Stadium Tuesday night.

The Pride, which won their fourth consecutive game, boosted their record to 8-3 on the season while Marist dropped their fourth straight game to slip to 3-8 on the year.

Varn, a co-Captain from Ithaca, New York, topped his 2013 five-goal performance against Sacred Heart and posted a career-best eight point evening. Junior Mike Malave added three goals and one assist while senior Drew Coholan and sophomore Korey Hendrickson each posted two goals and one assist. Sophomore Sam Llinares added a goal and three assists.

Marist was led by junior Drew Nesmith with six goals while classmate Colin Joka added two goals and Mike Begley posted a goal and an assist.  Junior goalie Dave Scarcello made 14 saves in the Marist cage.

Hofstra scored three of the first four goals in the contest, in the first 7:56, to take a 3-1 lead on goals by Coholan, Malave and Hendrickson. After Joka closed the deficit to 3-2 just 1:46 into the second quarter, the Pride added two goals, both by Varn, to take a 5-2 advantage. But the Red Foxes responded with goals by Joseph Radin and Nesmith to close the deficit to 5-4.  But Varn and Coholan tallied goals in the last 4:30 of the half to boost the Hofstra lead to 7-4 at the break.

Nesmith opened the second half with a man-up goal to close to 7-5 but Hofstra answered with goals by Malave, Llinares and freshman Nick Altmann to double the lead at 10-5 with 6:31 to play in the third. The Red Foxes weren’t through as Joka scored his second of the game and Nesmith added two more to close to 10-8 with 1:50 to play in the third quarter.

But the Pride tallied four of the next five goals as Varn scored consecutive goals for Hofstra before Nesmith scored his fifth of the game for Marist. Varn and Hendrickson added goals to give Hofstra a 14-9 lead with 2:39 to play in the fourth. Nesmith notched his sixth of the game nine seconds later before Malave closed out the scoring with a man-up goal with 1:45 to play for the final 15-10 score.

Hofstra outshot Marist, 47-22 and picked up 38 ground balls to the Red Foxes 25. Hofstra freshman Kris Clarke won 19 of 27 face-offs for the Pride.

The Pride will close out their regular season home schedule and honor their graduating seniors this Saturday, April 12 when Hofstra takes on sixth-ranked Cornell at 1 p.m.
