Michigan's Logan Named Epoch/Lacrosse Magazine Player of the Week
Gerald Logan might be the best goalie you've never heard of — until now.
Logan led Michigan to one of the biggest wins in its young history Sunday, making 10 of his 15 saves against a barrage of shots in the second half of the Wolverines' 9-8 victory over Colgate — a borderline Top 20 team that qualified for the NCAA tournament as the Patriot League champion a year ago. The performance earned him Epoch/Lacrosse Magazine Player of the Week honors.
Logan, a redshirt junior, has had big games before. He made 19 saves in his collegiate debut against Penn State as a freshman in 2013. His 25-save and 17-save performances against Army and Denver, respectively, that season also come to mind. As does his 18-save gem in a four-overtime victory against Saint Joseph's last year. (Logan redshirted the 2014 season due to an injury.)
But Sunday's showing allowed the Wolverines to pick up the type of signature win that eluded them in their first four seasons, when they went a combined 12-45. It also came just a week after Logan, the starter since he first stepped on campus, was removed from the game in a lopsided loss at North Carolina.
"He makes a lot of saves you don’t expect him to make, and that was missing last week," Michigan coach John Paul said afterward. "Today, he made those.”
Logan's 25th career game with double-digit saves could not have come at a better time. The Wolverines could show some staying power with a win Saturday at Penn.
