St. Leo, Mars Hill Take Deep South Awards

Saint Leo University won two of the three weekly Deep South Conference Awards in the third week of voting, league officials announced Monday afternoon. Mars Hill College took the other honor.

Saint Leo senior midfielder Kyle Marceau (Concord, N.H.) is this week's Offensive Player of the Week. SLU junior goalkeeper David Erdman (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) is the Defensive Player of the Week, while Mars Hill freshman defense Ryan Herrmann (Columbus, Ohio) was selected Freshman of the Week.

Marceau collected nine goals and three assists as the Lions completed a North Carolina swing with two DSC victories and one narrow non-league defeat. A first team All-DSC performer in 2009, Marceau had five goals and one assist in a 16-5 victory at Catawba Sunday.

In addition, the Concord (N.H.) High School product had three goals and one helper in a heartbreaking 10-9 double-overtime loss at Queens University of Charlotte Friday. Marceau contributed one goal and one assist in a 10-3 triumph at Wingate University Wednesday. Marceau leads Saint Leo (3-1 overall) with 10 goals and five assists on the season.

Erdman picked up two wins last week. The 2007 DSC Freshman of the Year recorded four saves and allowed three Wingate goals in the victory over the Bulldogs. Erdman had eight ground balls in the Wingate contest.

The 2009 All-DSC first team member had 14 saves against the Queens Royals, surrendering 10 goals. In the Catawba encounter, he posted seven saves and allowed three goals in 45 minutes of action. Erdman has 34 saves and 21 goals allowed in four games this season.

Herrmann held Le Moyne (N.Y.) College junior preseason All-American attack man Jack Venditti pointless (no goals, no assists) in the Lions' 7-6 loss to the number two Dolphins Sunday. Herrmann has helped the Mars Hill Lions to victories over Birmingham Southern and St. Andrews Presbyterian in the season's early stages.
