C.W. Post Grinds Out Win Over Mercyhurst

– Senior attacker Jimmy Johnston (Farmingville, N.Y.) tallied two goals to lead third-ranked C.W. Post over Mercyhurst, 4-3, Saturday afternoon in an East Coast Conference men's lacrosse clash on Hickox Field.

The win improves C.W. Post's overall record to 11-1 and 4-1 in the ECC. Mercyhurst dips to 7-2 overall and 5-2 in conference play.

The Pioneers put up a 2-0 lead in the first quarter as junior midfielder Keith Rodriguez (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) scored the first goal on a rifled shot past the goalkeeper at 7:02. Johnston followed up with his first goal on a pass from senior midfielder Mike Messina (Sayville, N.Y.) at 1:22.

Mercyhurst cut the lead in half with 28 seconds to play when Brian Scheetz, who led the Lakers with two goals in the game, score his first goal unassisted.

Mercyhurst tied things up, scoring the lone goal in the second as Scheetz fired another shot into the nylon with 10:01 left to play in the first half.

Both teams' defense was busy in the game as they held each other scoreless for the remaining 10 minutes of the half.

In the third, the Pioneers took the lead for good when junior attacker Eddie Plompen (West Islip, N.Y.) scored on a short pass from sophomore Matt Riccio (Trumbull, Conn.) to put the Pioneers ahead, 3-2.

Johnston added an insurance goal in the fourth for the Pioneers with his second goal of the game at 14:05.

The Lakers sliced into the lead again as Andy Winslow scored from 10 yards out on a pass from Kevin Coholan.

Mercyhurst outshot C.W. Post, 36-26, but was short on ground balls as the Pioneers held a 36-31 advantage.

Senior Mike Giordano (Farmingdale, N.Y.) made 13 saves in the game to preserve the win for the Pioneers. Senior midfielder John Wood (Marblehead, Mass.) led the team with three caused turnovers.

Zach Nash made 14 stops in goal for the Lakers.
