Adelphi's Streak to 10, Sneak by St. Mike's

from press release

- The seventh-ranked Adelphi University men's lacrosse team traveled to take on the Purple Knights of St. Michael's College this afternoon in Colchester, Vt. Adelphi extended their win streak to 10 games with a 7-6 win in double overtime. Adelphi improves to 10-1 and 6-0 in the NE-10, while SMC falls to 5-5 and 4-2.

With the win, Adelphi matches the program's record with 10 wins in a row and they are also two wins shy of tying the program's record with wins in a season.

For Adelphi, junior Kieran Riegel netted the game-winning goal 36 seconds into the second overtime to seal the win for the Panthers, who were down 6-5 with three minutes left in regulation but managed to tie the game on a Timothy Aiello goal with 2:43 remaining.

For the Panthers, Aiello, graduate student Tommy Susko and junior Danny Blau each had two goals, and junior goalie Eric Janssen made 14 saves to keep Adelphi in the game. Junior Shane Wynn played a crucial role towards the end of the contest, coming up with key face-off victories.

The Purple Knights held a slim 1-0 lead after one period and stretched their advantage to 3-1 with two Donnally goals in the second period, including a last-second flush heading into halftime. Susko notched back-to-back goals to open the second half and tie the game, and Blau gave Adelphi its first lead of the game with an unassisted tally with 5:27 to play in the third period.

Donnally knotted things up again with his third goal of the game last in the third, and Hanson reclaimed the lead for Saint Michael's with a hard-fought goal after coming away with the ball following an extended, multiple-player skirmish for the ball.

Aiello pushed the third tie of the game with a goal that made it 5-5 with 4:18 to play, but Donnally put Saint Michael's back in the driver's seat with his fourth goal after a long breakaway sprint down the right sideline. The Purple Knights could not hold on, however, and Aiello answered right back with a goal 21 seconds later to tie the game at 6-all and force overtime.

After a scoreless first overtime, Riegel unleashed a blazing shot that found the back of the net and gave Adelphi a dramatic 7-6 double-overtime win.

For Saint Michael's, sophomore Pete Donnally had a game-high four goals, and Andrew Buccellato and junior Peter Hanson each chipped in a goal. Freshman goalie Chris Demairo (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) made 11 saves in a complete game in net.

The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, April 20, when they host nationally-ranked Le Moyne College on Motamed Field at 4:00 p.m.
