No. 5 Adelphi Holds on to Beat Pace

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - The No. 5 Adelphi University men's lacrosse team hosted the Setters of Pace University this evening on Motamed Field in a league match-up. Adelphi held a 10-4 lead headed into the fourth period and came out with a 10-8 victory. Adelphi improves to 11-2 and 8-1 in the NE-10, while Pace falls to 5-8 and 3-6.

For the Panthers, junior Joe Vitale led the way with three goals and two assists, while classmate Shane Wynn added two goals and two assists. Junior Eric Janssen set aside 14 shots for Adelphi's 12th win of the season.

Junior Kieran Riegel got the Panthers out to an early 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal, 41 seconds into regulation. Vitale would then set up Wynn to give Adelphi a 2-0 lead. Right before the end of the first period Vincent Rini found Matt Gebhardt for the Setters' first score.

Vitale would then open the second period with two straight scores. After Vitale's two scores to open the period, he then assisted on sophomore Michael Rossi's first goal of the game. With 12:04 left in the half, Joe Arlotta got Pace within three with a goal to make the score 5-2.

Junior Doug Quednau scored back-to-back goals for the Panthers to give Adelphi a 7-2 lead with 5:46 left on the clock. Pace would get a score right before the end of the first half off the stick of Kevin Kadlick.

To open the third period, Adelphi would score two man-up goals from Rossi and Wynn. After a Setters' score, Vitale found the back of the net for the third time to give Adelphi a six-goal lead headed into the final period.

Pace would attempt a comeback in the fourth quarter, holding Adelphi scoreless and scoring four goals of their own, but it wasn't enough as the Panthers went on to win, 10-8.

For the Setters, Kadlick scored two goals and added two assists, while Thomas Earl handed out three assists. Kevin Grady stopped 12 shots in the loss.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, April 30, when they face Franklin Pierce University at noon in Rindge, N.H. for their regular season finale.
