No. 6 NYIT Bounces Back, Doubles Up AIC

from press release

- After a 7-0 first period lead, sixth-ranked NYIT men's lacrosse cruised to a 14-7 win over American International Wednesday afternoon at President's Stadium. Rookies Luke Miller (Mastic, N.Y.) and Brandon Gamblin (Lake Grove, N.Y.) each tallied hat tricks in the outing, while Miller led with five assists. With the win, the Bears improved to 3-1 on the season and the Yellow Jackets dropped to 0-1 overall.

Seniors Billy McGee (Rocky Point, N.Y.) and Joe Fallon (Kings Park, N.Y.) split time between the pipes. McGee earned the win with two saves, while Fallon made three saves.

NYIT forced 35 AIC turnovers and out-shot the Yellow Jackets 51-21. The Bears' defense caused 25 turnovers and collected 55 groundballs in the outing.

A minute and a half into the game, Miller found Gamblin to make it a 1-0 game. Three minutes later Miller set up the Bears' second goal as A.P. Nist (Parkland, Pa.) found the back of the net. NYIT then scored its first of three man-up goals with 8:44 remaining in the first period. Gamblin teamed up with Miller to make it a 3-0 game.

Miller continued to shine as he dished out his third assist to Bobby Calhoun (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) for the Bear's fourth goal at 7:59. NYIT's offense was not done yet as Jason Smith (Setuaket, N.Y.) continued to push the Bears head with back-to-back goals a minute apart before Miller closed out the first half with an unassisted strike with 3:36 remaining. The Bears dominated possession in the first half, taking 19 shots compared to the Yellow Jacket's three.

Nick Amendt broke through the silence for AIC three minutes into the second half but Calhoun responded with what eventually would become the game-winner at 10:55. Calhoun's goal sparked another unanswered run of five goals by NYIT over two periods. The run included another from Gamblin, one from Sean Rimmer (Orchard Park, N.Y.), one from Ryan Brunet (South Beach, N.Y.) and one from Mike Ross (Adams, N.Y.) that made the score 12-1 with 6:10 left in the third period. Although AIC would score twice more, NYIT held a 14-3 advantage heading into the fourth and final period.

Yet, the fourth period belonged to AIC. The Yellow Jackets scored four goals over the span the cut the gap in half, 14-7 at the end of the game. Amendt scored his second goal of the game, while Bryce Serillo notched a hat trick.

NYIT lacrosse returns to action on Saturday, March 3 when it opens East Coast Conference play against Lake Erie College. The first face-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. at President's Stadium.
