No. 5 Dowling Beats No. 9 NYIT

from press release

- Senior goalkeeper Ryan Dougherty had a stellar second half as the Dowling defensive unit tightened up propelling the Golden Lions to a 10-8 victory over No. 9 NYIT at home. With the win, Dowling improves to 3-0 (3-0 ECC) while NYIT drops to 4-2 (1-1 ECC).

Dougherty was impressive, making 7 second half saves (13 for the game), none bigger than a key one-on-one stop of Brandon Gamblin on the doorstep while NYIT was man-up with 7:00 remaining. In front of Dougherty, the defense led by Matt Lauria who caused 3 turnovers and scooped up 2 groundballs sparked the second half surge.

Trailing 5-6 at the half, the Golden Lions had their chances early and finally connected on a Tom Cleary tally at the 11:31 mark and tied the game at six. With less than a minute remaining in the quarter, Brandon Hayes streaked down the right side of the cage and beat NYIT goaltender Billy McGee to put Dowling ahead 7-6.

The Bears tied it at seven, but three unanswered goals by Dowling put the game out of reach. Cleary netted his third of the game on the extra man off a feed from Billy Richardson. The freshman took the pass on the left arc and fired a rocket that ripped the net in the right corner. Seven minutes later, Dowling took advantage on the fast break when John Amato isolated Vito Demola to the right of the cage and he beat McGee top shelf.

The three goal lead (10-7) was enough as Lou Riley won pressue faceoffs down the stretch to keep possession in Dowling's favor. Riley finished 19-22 at the circle, a remarkable 86 percent on the afternoon.

In addition to Cleary's hat trick, Michael Brennan had three goals as well for Dowling. For NYIT, Bobby Calhoun had two2 goals and an assist, Gamblin had two goals and McGee finished with 12 saves between the pipes.

Dowling returns to action next weekend when it travels to Old Westbury to take on rival CW Post at 1:00 PM.
