Top-Ranked Mercyhurst Fends Off C.W. Post

from press release

- The No. 1 Mercyhurst men's lacrosse team beat No. 12 C.W. Post, 8-5, Saturday afternoon at Tullio Field. Brian Scheetz scored twice and dished out three assists in the East Coast Conference (ECC) win.

The match got off to a slow start, as both teams got acclimated to the low temperatures and wind. Connor Drost scored for Post with 10:43 left in the first quarter, but then the teams went over six minutes without scoring.

Kyle Kallay evened the score with 4:11 remaining, as Jake McAndrew assisted. Just over a minute later, Mark Saltrelli gave Hurst a 2-1 edge. The Lakers set up for the final possession of the first period and Scheetz found Zac Reid for a goal and a 3-1 advantage.

In the second frame, sloppy play and physical defense took over. Scheetz finally got the scoring going with a goal at the 6:08 mark. Eddie Plompen answered with two goals in 66 seconds to get the Pioneers back in it. Doug Hoch capped the half with a goal in the final minute to tie the score.

Scheetz started the second half with his second score, but Plompen came back with a tying goal a few minutes after. Kallay finished a McAndrew pass to put the hosts up 6-5 with 3:48 to go in the third. Hurst won the face-off to start the fourth quarter and immediately got insurance, as Scheetz hit Kallay for a goal 14 seconds in.

The match became increasingly chippy as the clock ran out, as eight penalties were called. Matt Hummel closed the scoring with 63 seconds to play.

Mercyhurst improved to 6-0 overall and 5-0 in the ECC. Post fell to 3-4 overall and 1-4 in the conference. It marks the Lakers' first regular season victory over the Pioneers since 2008.

Scheetz had five points, while Kallay had three goals and an assist. Michael Grace made four saves in net. Plompen led the visitors with three goals, while Sam Price recorded seven saves in net.

Hurst heads to Wheeling Jesuit on Tuesday, April 3. The ECC match is slated for a 4 p.m. start.
