No. 3 Limestone Squeezes By No. 10 Pfeiffer

from press release

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Facing rival No. 10 Pfeiffer (11-3, 5-1 CC) on their home turf, No. 3 Limestone (12-1, 6-0 CC) earned their fifth straight Conference Carolinas Regular Season Championship, and undefeated league season, as they downed the Falcons 12-10 in an NCAA Division II men's lacrosse game on Saturday, April 13.

Senior attack Riley Loewen (Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada) drilled home three goals and added a pair of assists to lead the way while senior midfielder Tor Reinholdt (Port Moody, British Columbia, Canada) finished with two goals and two assists. They were joined by junior attack Todd Nakasuji (Ajax, Ontario, Canada) with a pair of assists and a score along with three groundballs.

Senior attack Corey Rich (Sacramento, Calif.) added two goals, an assist and a pair of groundballs while senior face-off specialist Jake Ternosky (LaFayette, N.Y.) went 12-of-24 at the center "X" and scored his first goal of the season on a breakaway.

Freshman midfielder Reid Reinholdt (Port Moody, British Columbia, Canada) chipped in with a pair of goals and senior goalkeeper Christian Dzwilewski (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) went all 60 minutes in goal, allowing 10 goals and making 17 saves to improve to 9-1 on the year.

Senior midfielder Zach Cummings (Crownsville, Md.) got the Saints on the board just 48 seconds into the game off a pass from Todd Nakasuji before Pfeiffer rattled off the next four goals to take a 4-1 lead at the 6:34 mark of the first quarter. The teams then traded goals to make if 5-2 before Limestone drilled three straight to tie it at 5-5 with 9:51 to play in the second quarter.

After the Falcons took two of the next three to pull back ahead at 7-6, back-to-back goals by Corey Rich and Jake Ternosky in a span of six seconds put Limestone up 8-7. That would be a margin they would take to the half. Tor Reinholdt would make it three straight with a goal near the start of the second half but PU's Elliot Gilbert connected at 10:54 to close to within 9-8.

At that point, Riley Loewen took matters into his own hands as he delivered back-to-back scores at 5:05 and 1:40 of the third quarter to stretch the lead to a game-high 11-8. The Falcons James Shepherd would connect at the beginning of the fourth, drawing Pfeiffer to within 11-9 but a goal by Rich with 3:58 to play would all but put the game, and the championship, away. A goal by PU with 24 seconds to play would take the game to the final margin of 12-10.

Steven Tilmon led Pfeiffer with three scores and an asist while Gilbert had two goals, an assist and three groundballs. Shepherd finished with a pair of scores and Kory Lutes and Mike Triolo each had solo goals. Matt Michaeli finished with a goal and an assist and Hayden Kirk allowed 12 goals and made 14 saves in 60 minutes of action between the pipes.

Limestone will now enter the 2013 Conference Carolinas Tournament in Burlington, N.C. as the No. 1 seed and will play fourth seeded Belmont Abbey (9-5, 3-3 CC) at 4 p.m. on Friday, April 19.

Today's meeting was the second straight season Pfeiffer and Limestone had played a defacto regular season championship game ... the Saints won 8-7 in overtime last year on April 12.
