NYIT Stays Alive, Downs LIU Post in Triple OT

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. - In its second multiple overtime victory, the No. 7 NYIT men's lacrosse team defeated neighboring No. 12 LIU Post, 9-8, to take home the 2014 "Battle of the Boulevard" title on Senior Day at President's Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Shawn Murphy (Holbrook, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal in triple overtime to help the Bears improved to 10-3 on the season and 7-1 in East Coast Conference play. The Pioneers dropped to 6-5 on the season and 5-2 in league action.
The victory secures the No. 2 seed for NYIT in the inaugural ECC Men's Lacrosse Championships, which will be held on April 30 and May 3.
Murphy led the Bears with four goals and one assist. Junior Luke Miller (Mastic, N.Y.) added two goals and two assists to his season points tally.
The win went to rookie Alex Seltzer (Plainview, N.Y.), who improved to 10-3 on the season with 18 saves made on 26 shots faced. The loss was dealt to T.J. DiCarlo (5-4), who made 15 saves on 24 shots faced.
The Bears claimed an early 5-2 lead heading into halftime, but after the break, the Pioneers rallied to twice make it a one-goal contest at 5-4 with 9:02 remaining in the third period and 7-6 to open the second period.
NYIT reclaimed control with a goal from Murphy off an assist by Miller with 8:07left in regulation. However, back-to-back LIU Post goals from Joe Costello and Chris Caiazza knotted the game 8-8 with 1:33 to go and sent the contest into overtime.
The Pioneers out-shot the Bears 7-4 in the first two overtime periods but could not convert. Then, with 2:26 remaining in the third period, Murphy scored his 27th goal of the season, unassisted, to lift NYIT to victory.
NYIT returns to action on Wednesday, April 23 when it hosts No. 1 Adelphi in North Region action. Face-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. at President's Stadium.
