Cabrini Seeks Eighth Straight NCAA Tournament Appearance

from press release

The No. 6/5 Cabrini men's lacrosse team begins its quest for an eighth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament Wednesday, February 25 at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Face-off against the Devils is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
The Cavaliers open the 2009 season ranked No. 5 and 6 in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) and Inside Lacrosse/Nike Media Polls, respectively.
Cabrini begins the season on the road for the sixth straight year and for the eighth time in the last 10 campaigns. Dating back to the 1995 season, the Cavaliers are 6-8 in season-opening games, winning the last two at Washington & Lee University (6-5) in 2007 and Roanoke College (10-9) in 2008.
Head coach Steve Colfer begins his ninth season at the Cabrini helm in 2009. He owns a 108-30 career record, including a streak of 65 consecutive regular season wins against Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) opponents.
The Cavaliers' veteran-laden roster is anchored by the return of three USILA All-America selections from one year ago. Junior attackman Casey Grugan (70P, 45G, 25A) heads the group after earning third-team recognition in 2008. Grugan begins the season just 11 goals shy of 100 for his career.
Senior attackman Scott Reimer earned honorable mention accolades and powered the Cabrini offense last season, totaling 74 points on 68 goals and six assists. Senior defenseman Jeff Moore also received honorable mention distinction, tallying 58 groundballs and 33 caused turnovers as the Cavaliers' leader on close defense.

Cabrini holds a 3-2 advantage against the Devils in a series that debuted in 1995. Fairleigh Dickinson emerged victorious in the inaugural encounter, 13-4. The Cavaliers captured a win in the teams' last meeting, downing FDU, 12-5, in 2006.
Head coach Pat Scarpello is in his eighth season at Fairleigh Dickinson. Before taking over the Devils, Scarpello served as head men's lacrosse coach at Cabrini for three seasons. He totaled a 21-22 overall record and 4-2 conference mark (2 seasons) while with the Cavaliers.
Junior attackman Kevin Shadiack returns to the Devils' front-line after leading the 2008 squad with 42 points on 23 goals and 19 assists. Sophomore attackman Drew Canfield returns following a rookie season that saw him tally 28 points on 16 goals and 12 assists.
Sophomore defenseman Rob Novack led FDU last season with 32 groundballs. Junior Evan Mager has been moved to the midfield after playing between the pipes last season. Mager started 13-of-14 games in the cage and posted a 4-8 record and 10.35 goals-against average.
