Roanoke Beats W&L in Top Five Battle in OT

SALEM, Va. -- Roanoke College's Zach Thomas tied the game with 3:15 left and tallied the game-winner with 2:59 remaining in overtime to lift the second-ranked Maroons to a 14-13 overtime victory over fifth-ranked Washington and Lee in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Wednesday evening at Kerr Stadium.

The Generals (11-2, 3-1 ODAC) assumed a 13-11 lead with 4:11 left in the game as junior attackman Will Keigler (Timonium, Md./Gilman) scored off an assist from senior midfielder Tim Skeen (Baltimore, Md./Towson). However, the Maroons (15-0, 5-0) answered just 16 seconds later when Matt Quinton scored off a feed from Stephen Simmons and Thomas tied the game with an unassisted tally.

W&L won the faceoff to begin overtime and had a point-blank shot by Skeen that was saved by Roanoke goalkeeper Jake Dorsey. Senior midfielder Harry St. John (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) was unable to snag the rebound, and Roanoke scored on a fastbreak to the other end when Pat March fed Thomas for the game-winner.

The Maroons opened a 3-0 lead the begin the game, but the Generals scored six of the next seven goals to assume a 6-4 lead with 3:04 left in the half and held a 6-5 advantage at the break.

W&L held the lead until five seconds remained in the third period when Joseph Coretti scored for RC to tie the game at 10-10. Again, the Generals gained control, surging out to a 12-10 lead with 7:01 left and maintaining the advantage until Thomas tied it at 13-13.

Keigler paced the Generals with four goals and one assist, while Skeen totaled two goals and two assists. Senior attackman Seth Fishman (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Haverford) chipped in a pair of goals and senior goalkeeper Connor Locke (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) posted 13 saves between the pipes.

Thomas led Roanoke with three goals and one assist, while Brian Foley had one goal and three assists. Dorsey notched 18 saves in goal.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Hampden-Sydney for a 1:00 pm contest.
