Billy Leads No. 12 RPI Past Elmira

from press release

– Senior Nick Billy (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) recorded a game-best seven points, including the 100th point of his career, to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team to a 12-2 victory over Elmira College at East Campus Stadium. The 12th-ranked Engineers are now 4-1 on the season and winners of their last three contests. The Soaring Eagles fall to 2-1 overall.

RPI, which dominated the game from the opening face-off, got on the board at the 9:43 mark as Billy notched his first of the game on a rocketed shot down the middle through traffic. He made it a 2-0 advantage for the home team minutes later and the Engineers led 3-0 after the opening quarter on a tally by sophomore Brett Overend (Laguna Hills, CA/Laguna Hills).

The second quarter saw a similar pattern as Billy notched back-to-back goals within the first three minutes of the stanza to make it a 5-0 lead. Elmira was able to break through at 10:43 as senior Kenny Kierstead (Waltham, MA/Winchendon) collected a nice pass from rookie David Evert (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Wheatfield) and banked it in past RPI goalie James Manchester (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna).

A tally less than two minutes later by senior Conor Chocheles (Babylon, NY/Babylon) saw the Engineers head into the locker room with a 6-1 lead at halftime.

Rensselaer continued to put on the offensive pressure in the second half, scoring six straight goals from the third quarter to the fourth for a 12-1 lead. Senior Devin Arnold (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) got things going with an unassisted man-up tally at 7:13 of the third stanza. Rookie Scott O'Leary (Grafton, MA/Milton Academy) punched one in less than two minutes later and Billy stretched the advantage to eight (9-1) with 3:41 left in the quarter.

The Engineers continued to capitalize on Elmira's penalties as sophomore Eric Valero (Princeton Jct., NJ/W. Windsor Plainsboro) scored on the man-up with 53 seconds left in the third quarter and Billy added his sixth of the contest at 10:23 of the final stanza after a slashing call against rookie Dustin Gatt (Welland, ON/Notre Dame College).

With RPI holding a 12-1 advantage, the Soaring Eagles were able to add another tally as junior TJ White (Collegeville, PA/Methacton) scored past goalie Alex Castronovo (Garden City, NY/Garden City) with 1:59 left in the game, but it wasn't enough.

Billy finished with six goals and an assist in the game to move his career totals to 58 goals and 45 assists for 103 points in 51 games played. RPI, which saw its defense hold the visitors to just nine shots in the game (44-9), also saw O'Leary add a pair of tallies, while Arnold scored a goal and assisted twice. In goal, Manchester picked up the victory, stopping two shots before giving way to Castronovo (2 saves) with 6:09 left in the game.

For Elmira, White and Keirstead scored the lone goals, while Evert had an assist. In goal, sophomore Dave Bucchino (Cedar Grove, NJ/Bow) shouldered the loss, stopping 13 shots. Rookie Brady Richards (Cortice, ON/The Hill Academy) made two saves in 11:55 of relief.

The Engineers are back in action on Wednesday when they open Liberty League play at home against Vassar (7pm). Elmira is also in action on Wednesday, hosting Susquehanna (4pm).
