Early Surge Helps No. 15 Cabrini

– The No. 15 Cabrini men's lacrosse team has returned to the win column following an 11-6 victory on Saturday afternoon at Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) opponent FDU – Florham. The Cavaliers out-scored the Devils 7-2 over the first two quarters en route to their sixth win all-time versus FDU and their third straight since the 2009 campaign.

Senior midfielder Paul Skulski (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley HS) and senior midfielder Dan Terenick (Woodlynn, Pa./Ridley HS) each totaled four points in the win. Skulski paired one goal with three assists, while Terenick tallied two scores and contributed two helpers.

Sophomore attachman Bobby Thorp (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee HS) also netted two goals for the Blue & White.

Nine different Cavaliers converted scores on the offensive end, including freshman Bill McCabe (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring-Ford HS), who deposited his first career goal at the 7:47 mark of the first quarter.

Cabrini owned a 2-1 advantage after the opening 15 minutes. Junior attackman Brian Hill (Folsom, Pa./Ridley HS) supplied the Cavaliers with the one-goal edge, scoring his sixth goal of the season with just seven seconds remaining.

The Blue & White blitzed the Devils in the second period, out-scoring the hosts 5-1 en route to a 7-2 cushion at the intermission. After FDU pulled within 3-2, the Cavaliers closed the half on a 4-0 spurt over the final four minutes.

Junior midfielder Joe Arrell (Springfield, Pa./Springfield Delco HS) started the surge with his second goal of the season at the 3:25 mark. Sophomore midfielder Andrew Layne (Downingtown, Pa./Malvern Prep) capped the decisive run with his first goal of the year with 30 seconds left before halftime.

FDU trimmed its deficit to three goals, 7-4, scoring one in the third quarter and a quick one to begin the fourth and final period.

Yet, the Cavaliers regained a four-goal advantage, 9-5, with Terenick's first goal of the game at the 8:17 mark of the fourth quarter. Terenick added his second score of the game, and his seventh of the season, on a man-up opportunity with 2:33 remaining in the game.

Sophomore goalkeeper Erick Zarzecki (Owings Mills, Md./Pikesville HS) made his 21st consecutive start in between the pipes and earned the win for the Blue & White, recording 11 saves.

Senior longstick midfielder Anthony Mazza (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall HS), junior defenseman John McSorley (Ridley Park, Pa./Ridley HS) and sophomore defenseman Andrew Kvech (Pasadena, Md./Mount Saint Joseph HS) each scooped a team-high three groundballs. Senior defenseman Steve Heaps (Street, Md./North Harford HS) caused three turnovers.

Sophomore midfielder Brandon Dunn (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga HS) led the Cabrini effort in the face-off circle, winning 5-of-6 attempts.

Pat O'Brien notched two points with two goals for the Devils in the loss. Dino Vitale posted 14 saves for FDU.

The win improves Cabrini's record to 6-2 all-time against FDU. The Cavaliers have won three straight against the Devils over the last three seasons.

Cabrini (3-3) opens its Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) schedule on Saturday, March 26 on the road against Shenandoah University. Game time against the Hornets is set for 2 p.m.
