No. 6 Stevens Scores First 10, Hammers Utica

from press release

– Junior co-captain Alex Hofrichter netted a hat-trick in the first quarter of play as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team, ranked sixth in the latest USILA Coaches Poll, powered past Utica College 25-4 at De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, N.J. in what served as both squads' Empire 8 opener. With the win, the undefeated Ducks improved to 8-0 overall on the season, while the Pioneers fell to 1-5 on the year.

Looking to wrestle control of the game early, Stevens jumped out to a commanding 10-0 lead after the first 15 minutes of action. Hofrichter got things started with a goal less than three minutes after the opening whistle, before senior co-captain Chris Laurita made it 2-0 with a tally at 10:47. Sophomore midfielder Nicolas Philippi then buried another score to make it 3-0 before Laurita struck again – just 43 seconds later – to up the margin to four. Thiry-six seconds after Laurita's second goal, fellow senior co-captain Brandon Faubert hammered home the Ducks' third score in a 1:20 span.

Hoping to keep the momentum going, junior attack Kevin Rose rifled a shot into the Utica goal at the 6:23 mark of the first, before consecutive Hofrichter tallies – just over a minute apart – staked Stevens to an 8-0 edge. Freshman attack Christian Saley scored the Ducks' ninth goal of the afternoon with 2:50 left in the quarter, before Faubert capped off a dominating period with a score at the 18 second mark.

Saley would keep things rolling to start the second, netting another goal just under the 14-minute mark on a man-up situation, before Utica's Scott Baron (Flemington, N.J.) finally put the Pioneers on the board with 7:22 to go before the half. Stevens responded by going on a 5-0 run to close out the period, taking a 16-1 lead into the intermission on a Hofrichter goal just before the horn.

Continuing to go on the offensive coming out of the break, Stevens netted the third quarter's first four goals, with Faubert collecting two more scores during that span. Showing some life toward the end of the third, Utica strung together three goals to make it 20-4, but Stevens proved to be too much down the stretch, adding five more goals in the fourth and final period, with freshman Connor Lynch tallying his second collegiate goal with 3:47 left in regulation to close out scoring.

Faubert finished with eight points on six goals and a pair of assists, while Hofrichter tallied four scores. Laurita added five points on three goals and a couple of helpers, while freshman attack Charlie Cronin had two goals and three assists. Saley tallied three markers, while Philippi, senior co-captain Jacob Messimer, junior Kevin Rose, and freshmen Tim Culloty and Sean Kelley each chipped in with a score.

Junior midfielder Michael Steinhauser who went 15-for-19 from the 'X', led the Ducks with 10 ground balls, while Culloty and sophomore Brian Seldeen combined for eight ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Baron had two goals to pace the Pioneers, while senior goalkeeper Joe Davis (Vestal, N.Y.) made 12 saves in the loss.

Stevens held a decisive 73-25 shot advantage, going 26-for-33 on face-offs, while clearing 18-of-22 attempts. Stevens, which went 7-for-10 on man-up opportunities and also helped force 30 Utica turnovers, returns to action on March 30 against non-conference foe Richard Stockton College.

Following today's game, Stevens men's lacrosse welcomed youth lacrosse teams from Brooklyn, N.Y. and Branchburg, N.J. and Nutley, N.J. onto the De Baun Athletic Complex turf for a free clinic as part of the squad's Youth Day activities.
