No. 8 RPI Hands Pesky Hamilton First Loss

from press release

– Junior midfielder Andrew Liptak scored with 1:22 remaining in the contest and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team held off a last second charge to defeat Hamilton College, 11-10 in Liberty League action on Saturday. With the victory, the #8 Engineers move to 7-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play. The Continentals saw their undefeated run come to an end, slipping to 6-1 on the season and 0-1 in the Liberty League.

Holding a 6-3 lead after the first half of action, Rensselaer saw its three-goal cushion evaporate as Hamilton came out firing with back-to-back goals from sophomore Luke Walsh (Loudonville, NY/Shaker) and junior Lucas Sadoff (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) cutting the advantage to one (6-5) at 12:38 of the third quarter.

Despite a quick goal less than a minute after Sadoff's from Wes Rudy (Doylestown, PA/The Hill School), the Engineers found themselves tied at 7-all as sophomore McCullough Shriver (Marlborough, CT/Choate Rosemary Hall) scored with 2:04 left in the third stanza and Walsh made it an even game just 25 seconds into the final quarter.

RPI's Andrew Miller (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) gave the lead back to the home team with 11:43 remaining after he fired one in past Hamilton's Max Vaickus (Hingham, MA/Hingham Public Schools) off a pass from junior Grant Foulsham (Madison, NJ/Madison), but the Continentals continued to press.

Junior Jon Leanos (Long Valley, NJ/Delbarton School) – the league's leading scorer entering this afternoon's contest – was able to pull things even once again with a nice individual effort in front to make it an 8-8 game with 6:31 left in the contest.

The Engineers answered once again as Rudy capitalized on the man-up advantage and Miller scored nearly two minutes later to give RPI a two-goal cushion (10-8) with just 3:16 left in the contest.

Walsh, who had a game-best four goals, got the Continentals within one goal less than a minute later, but Liptak (Westfield, MA/Westfield) had his most dramatic goal of the season at the 1:22 mark as he found a loose ball in front and was able to scoop it up for a quick shot past the reach of Vaickus.

The Liptak goal proved key in the closing seconds as the Continentals charged down the field. Holding possession, Leanos came around the back of the net and sent a low shot past RPI's James Manchester (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) with 17 seconds left, but the Engineers were able to get the ball back to end the game and secure the victory.

Rudy and Miller led the way for RPI offensively netting three goals apiece. Liptak finished with two tallies while Nick Billy (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) added a goal and two assists. In goal, Manchester finished with 11 saves to improve to 7-2 on the season.

For Hamilton, Leanos added two goals and two assists in addition to Walsh's four tallies. Four other players scored for the Continentals, while Vaickus moved to 6-1 on the season, shouldering his first loss with 11 stops.

RPI is back in action on Friday when it travels to Clarkson for a Liberty League match-up against the Golden Knights at 1pm. Hamilton is back in action on Wednesday with a 7pm conference game at Union.
