Dickinson Snaps 36-Game Streak to Bullets

– Dickinson used a 6-1 run spanning the third and fourth quarters to break open a close game and the ninth-ranked Red Devils ended a lengthy winless drought against Gettysburg, topping the Bullets 9-6 in a Centennial Conference men's lacrosse tilt Wednesday afternoon at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.

With the victory, conference-leading Dickinson (10-1, 4-0 CC) earned his first win over Gettysburg since 1975, ending a 36-game losing streak to the Bullets.

Sophomore Christian Beitel led the Red Devils with three goals, including two midway through the fourth quarter to cap their decisive run. With Dickinson leading 6-4, Beitel scored twice in just over a minute before sophomore long-stick Brandon Palladino capped the run with 5:04 left, scoring in transition to make it 9-4. Gettysburg scored twice inside the final 1:25 to set the final score.

Junior Pat Sartory (Ellicott City, Md./McDonogh School) scored a season-high three goals for the Bullets (6-5, 2-2 CC) while senior Chris Cahill (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy) handed out two assists to reach 100 career points. Freshman Henry Tesar (Lake Bluff, Ill./Avon Old Farms [Conn.]) contributed one goal and one assist.

Making his first collegiate start, freshman Max Pawk made eight saves for Dickinson while sophomore J.T. McCook (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep.) stopped seven shots for Gettysburg. Junior midfielder Chip Murray picked up nine ground balls for Dickinson, and senior defenseman Tommy Barnett (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick School), the reigning Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week, recorded five ground balls and four caused turnovers for the Bullets.

Sophomore Nick Avedisian (Laytonsville, Md./The Bullis School) finished with a season-high in face-off wins for Gettysburg, going 10-for-15.

Dickinson never trailed after scoring the game's first goal 1:49 into the contest on a Brian Cannon tally. Sartory tied it with 2:25 left in the opening period to make it a 1-1 game heading into the second quarter.

Brian Gleason scored the first of his two goals with 11:02 left in the first half before Sartory struck again with 6:23 on the clock, and it was a 2-2 game at the intermission.

Beitel notched the first goal of the second half as the Devils restored their one-goal advantage at the 11:44 mark of the third quarter. Cahill reached his milestone with his final assist, setting up senior Andrew Ryan's (Miami, Fla./Westminster School [Conn.]) goal with 7:35 left that tied it 3-3.

Dickinson closed the quarter with goals from Gleason at the 5:20 mark and Bobby Kingsley with nine seconds left to take a 5-3 advantage into the final 15 minutes.

The Bullets were called for a penalty following Kingsley's goal, and 11 seconds into the fourth quarter the Devils took advantage, as Matt Cherry cashed in on the man-up opportunity. Senior Chris Fumai (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) scored on a clear with 11:04 left to make it 6-4 before Dickinson's game-clinching 3-0 run.

Gettysburg returns to Centennial Conference play on Saturday, when it visits Ursinus College at 3 p.m.
