from press release

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Stevens Institute of Technology men’s lacrosse team rolled to its 14th win of the season on Wednesday afternoon, dismantling Elmira College, 21-8. The Ducks, 14-1 overall and 6-1 in the Empire 8, clinched a spot in the upcoming Empire 8 Championship with the win. Stevens, which ended the game with 59 shots and 59 ground balls, was led by four points from junior Kevin Rose, senior Chris Laurita, and junior Alex Hofrichter, and a team-high eight ground balls from senior Jacob Messimer.

The Ducks dominated the stat-sheet in this contest, ending with a 59-17 advantage in shots and a 59-27 edge in ground balls. Stevens converted 21-of-22 clears and only allowed the Soaring Eagles (5-7 overall, 1-6 Empire 8) to succeed on eight of their 24 clear attempts. Stevens went 2-for-5 on its man-up chances and only committed 13 turnovers. The Ducks also won 17 of the 32 face-offs in the game, led by junior Michael Steinhauser and his 12 wins (on 22 attempts).

Hofrichter and Rose hooked up for the first goal of the game 2:39 in and 1:12 later Laurita tallied. Sophomore Nicolas Philippi and Dupras got on the board after an Elmira goal to make it 4-1 Stevens, but after 15 minutes of play, the Ducks held a slim two-goal lead (5-3).

Two goals would be as close as the Soaring Eagles would get as the Ducks put together a monster second quarter, outscoring Elmira 8-1 and taking a 13-4 lead into the locker room. Philippi, freshman Charlie Cronin, senior Joey Simone, and Laurita tallied the first four scores of the second, with Rose, senior Brandon Faubert, Hofrichter, junior Matt Marks, and Philippi notching goals 10-13.

Philippi netted the Ducks’ first marker in the second, and after sophomore Tyler Campbell (Mississauga, Ontario) recorded his second score of the game for Elmira, Hofrichter and Rose put the Ducks up 16-5. Dupras, sophomore Harry Dorne, and junior Thomas Karam helped the Ducks take a 19-7 lead into the fourth quarter with freshmen Connor Lynch and Sean Scrudato recording the final Stevens scores of the game.

Campbell and freshman Dustin Gatt (Welland, Ont.) led Elmira with three goals apiece, while freshman David Evert (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) handed out three assists. Gatt also picked up a team-high five ground balls for Elmira, as did junior Travis Armideo (Kimberton, Pa.).

Junior Eric Yando earned the win in goal for Stevens, making four saves in his 30 minutes of game time. He now has 134 stops on the year and is 14-1.

Hofrichter tallied three goals, handed out one assist and picked up two ground balls, while Laurita had two goals, two helpers, a ground ball and caused turnover. Messimer added an assist and caused turnover to his eight ground balls, and Rose finished with two goals, two assists and two ground balls. Senior Ted Pfeifer led the team with three caused turnovers, and Faubert finished with two points on one goal and one assist. Philippi tallied three times and Simone had three points (one goal, two assists) to go along with a ground ball and caused turnover. Dupras found net three times as a total of 16 Ducks had points on the afternoon. Sophomore Marc Malecki had five ground balls and five face-off wins and sophomore Brian Seldeen had five ground balls and a caused turnover.
