Salisbury Earns Jostens Community Service Award

from press release

– The Salisbury University men's and women's lacrosse teams have earned the National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators (NADIIIAA)/Jostens Community Service Award.

Salisbury hosted a "Lax for Leukemia" event in conjunction with the men's game against Stevenson University on April 16, 2011, raising $15,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the National Marrow Donor Program.

The event featured a silent auction as well as a chance to register as a bone marrow donor. Among the prizes up for bid as part of the auction were rounds of golf at courses such as Congressional Country Club, numerous Salisbury University men's lacrosse items, a week's stay in a cabin in Maine and others.

Also, throughout the week leading up to the game, both men's and women's lacrosse teams gave t-shirts to those on campus who donated to the cause.

The impetus for the fundraiser was Salisbury midfielder Alex Nieves, who was diagnosed with Leukemia in December 2010.

SU claimed the award in the One-Time Event category and was recognized at the NCAA convention in January. With the award, Salisbury also earned $1,000 for the school's general scholarship fund.
