– The Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team, ranked No. 7 nationally, defeated Montclair State University on the road, 15-7, on Wednesday afternoon, March 21st. Freshman attack Andrew Scrutchfield (Lewes, Del.) led the Ducks with five first half goals, as Stevens improves to 6-1 this season.

Scrutchfield tallied two goals in the first four minutes to give Stevens a quick 2-1 lead. The first score was assisted by senior midfielder Taylor Brown (Cortland, N.Y.) at the 12:24 mark in the opening quarter, while the second was dished out by senior attack Kevin Rose (Garden City, N.J.) just 1:23 later.

Senior attack Alex Hofrichter (Terrance Park, Ohio) tallied his first of three goals on an unassisted score with 8:40 remaining in the first period, and then found Rose to give the Ducks a 4-1 advantage with just over four minutes later.

The opening 15 minutes was wrapped up with Scrutchfield's third goal of the quarter with :39 seconds left on the second of five assists from Rose to close the first quarter with a 5-1 lead for Stevens.

Stevens built on its lead with back-to-back scores from Scrutchfield and junior midfielder Rich Dupras (Hillsborough, N.J.) over a 7:10 span in the second quarter, giving the Ducks a commanding 7-1 lead.

Montclair finally ended the Stevens run with a man-up goal midway through the second period only to watch the Ducks go out another quick 3-0 in the final 4:41 and go into halftime with a 10-2 lead.

Hofrichter started the run for Stevens off the helper from Rose. Scrutchfield then scored his fifth and final goal of the half on an unassisted tally 1:14 later, while Dupras beat the halftime buzzer off Rose's fourth assist with five seconds remaining. Rose finished the game with six points.

As the third quarter got underway, Brown registered an unassisted goal in the first two minutes before the Red Hawks cut into their deficit with two scores over the next 6:19 to make to make it a seven-goal difference, 11-4.

The Ducks and Montclair traded goals over the final 4:24 of the third, as Hofrichter scored the 12th goal of the game for Stevens. Montclair came back with its fifth goal of the contest with 1:44 left, but senior defender Mike Marks (Cortland, N.Y.) erased that score with one of his own 1:06 later.

Stevens pushed its lead to a ten-goal advantage with scores from Dupras and Brown in the first five-plus minutes of the final quarter. Rose and freshman midfielder Michael Maroon (Virginia Beach, Va.) assisted on the two goals.

Montclair added two late goals in the game but the outcome was out of reach for the Red Hawks to mount and type of comeback.

Senior midfielder Michael Steinhauser (Boonton Twp., N.J.) won 10 face-offs and scooped up seven groundballs, while Marks picked up eight groundballs and forced three turnovers.

Between the pipes for the Ducks, senior Eric Yando (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) turned away nine shots and recorded four groundballs in pick up his sixth win of the season in 48:08 of action. Freshman Matthew Deiner (Millstone Twp., N.J.) made two saves in 7:32 of play, before giving way to sophomore Ben Schaffer (Armonk, N.Y.) who also tallied two saves in the final 4:20 of the contest.
Shots and groundballs were nearly even for both teams, as Montclair took more shots, 44-41, but Stevens picked up three more groundballs, 37-34. The Red Hawks also won the face-off battle, 13-10.

The Ducks had 11 more clear opportunities, 31-20, and converted on 25 of the chances. MSU cleared 16 of its chances.
