No. 4 RIT Needs Late Push To Down St. John Fisher

from press release

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The No. 4 ranked RIT men's lacrosse team (5-1) snapped a 7-7 tie in the fourth quarter with back-to-back goals to secure a 9-7 victory on a snowy afternoon at the RIT Turf Field over St. John Fisher College (6-2) on Wednesday. It is RIT's fifth straight victory.

Kyle Sterzin (Fairport, NY/Fairport) scored the eventual game-winner with 5:15 left in the final stanza and Kyle Aquin (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Jean De Brebeuf) netted four goals in the victory. Allister Warren (Toronto, Ontario/Malvern Collegiate Institute) added a goal and two assists in the winning effort, while Pat Johnston (Norwell, MA/Norwell) made nine saves.

Brett Farrell and Jeff Wester led St. John Fisher with two goals each.

The Tigers held a 33-25 advantage in shots and held a slight 35-30 lead in ground balls.

Coming into the contest, RIT had allowed only one first period goal through the first five games of the season, but the Cardinals struck for three scores in the first 12:27. At the end of one quarter, Fisher held a 3-1 lead.

The teams traded goals in the second quarter before Aquin netted consecutive goals to knot the game at 4. Fisher scored with 20 seconds remaining before the half to grab a 5-4 lead.

After the break, Aquin would score twice and Allister Warren (Toronto, Ontario/Malvern Collegiate Institute) would add another for the Tigers as they grabbed a 7-5 advantage. Nick Rossi scored for the Cardinals, who went into the fourth quarter trailing 7-6.

Wester evened the score at 7 with 13:05 remaining in the fourth. Fisher's best chance to claim the lead came with 10:27 left as the Tigers were whistled for an offside and a slashing penalty giving Fisher a two-man advantage. However, Johnston made a big save to keep the game tied.

Five mintues later, Sterzin took a perfect feed from Eddie Kiesa (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) for his ninth goal of the season and gave the Tigers the lead for good. Kiesa would add an insurance goal with 1:27 left in the game to seal the victory.

The win improves RIT to 11-3 all-time versus St. John Fisher, including last year's 15-10 victory at Growney Stadium.

The Tigers return to action on Saturday, as they kick off Liberty League play with a road game at Clarkson University at 1 p.m.
