Tufts Inches Closer, Out-Guns Bates

MEDFORD, Mass. - Sophomore Chris Schoenhut (Mill Neck, NY) scored five goals and senior captain Andrew Fiamengo (New Fairfield, CT) added four as the Tufts men's lacrosse team defeated Bates 14-10 in the quarterfinal round of the NESCAC Championship at Bello Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Jumbos (12-4), seeded third in the tournament, will play two-seed Connecticut College in the semi-final round at Middlebury next Saturday (May 4). The Camels were an 8-6 quarterfinal winner over Hamilton today. Bates finishes its season with a 7-7 mark.

After the Jumbos and Bobcats traded goals for the first seven minutes on Saturday, Tufts ran off four straight to take a 6-2 advantage on junior Beau Wood's (Sherwood Forest, MD) goal at 6:23 of the second quarter. Fiamengo had a goal and an assist during the Tufts run. However, Bates finished the half with goals by junior Will Gilkeson (Cleveland Heights, OH) and sophomore Reed Lewallen (Portland, OR) 1:10 apart to pull within 6-4 at halftime. Bates junior goalie Charlie Kazarian (Providence, RI) had seven saves in the second.

Tufts took control by out-scoring Bates 7-2 in the third quarter. Schoenhut netted two of the first three Jumbo goals as they took a 9-5 lead. After Bates' Nick Ford (Columbus, OH) scored a man-up goal to bring it to 9-6, the Jumbos tallied four times in a four-minute span late in the period to go up 13-6. Sophomore Cole Bailey (Millersville, MD) scored and assisted during that stretch.

The Bobcats had the better of the fourth period, but could not make up the difference. They won the quarter 4-1, including a goal and an assist by Ford.

The action featured 96 total shots, with Tufts holding a slim 49-47 advantage. Bates won groundballs 41-35. Both Tufts junior Patton Watkins (Chattanooga, TN) and Kazarian made 16 saves in goal.

Junior Kane Delaney (Brookeville, MD) had five groundballs for the Jumbos, while senior Sam Diss (Ridgewood, NJ) added four. Sophomore Garrett Read (Medfield, MA) caused two turnovers.

Bates was led by Nick Ford's three goals and two assists for five points. Sophomore Jack Strain (Montclair, NJ) had two assists. Ford, senior co-captain Charlie Clark (Pepper Pike, OH), senior Kyle Starr (Concord, NH), and senior Andrew Berry (Westwood, MA) all had four groundballs for the Bobcats. Junior Paul Donovan (Norwell, MA) and sophomore Mac Jackson (Hood River, OH) combined to win 15 of 28 face-offs.
