Davidson Hits 300 Point Mark in Castleton Romp

from press release

CASTLETON, Vt. - Zach Davidson has written his name into the Castleton record books several times before, but the junior made Wednesday night special. Davidson scored three goals and dished off three assists to become the first Spartan ever to reach 300 career points, and led the Spartans to a 17-7 win over Husson in the North Atlantic Conference semifinals.

Davidson's extraordinary effort led the Spartans to their 11th straight NAC Championship game. The squad has won three of the past four NAC championships, earning three NCAA Tournament berths in the past four years.

In addition to Davidson's massive statline, Alex Green added four goals, and Will Stuhler scored three, including the goal off of a Davidson assist that held as his 300th career point. Taylor Swarter finished with one goal and three assists. Nolan Brown and Vinny Visconti each scored three goals for the Eagles.

The Spartans took an early lead with Davidson scoring his 52nd goal of the season in the first minute of play. The goal was answered less than a minute later by the Eagles' Visconti to make it 1-1. Castleton owned the remainder of the quarter though, going on a 6-0 run to finish the frame.

In the second quarter, Husson came out and played even with the Spartans, with each team scoring three goals in the period. Matthew Levins notched a man-down goal for the Spartans to take an 8-1 lead, and Green added his third of the game to make it 9-1. The Eagles finished the half on a 3-1 run to make it 10-4 at halftime.

In the third, Castleton shutout the Eagles and extended their lead to 14-4. Green and Davidson each tallied a goal, and Will Stuhler scored two to give the Spartans momentum heading into the fourth quarter.

In the final frame, Davidson finished his night with 9:43 remaining when Will Stuhler buried his pass for a goal. The assist put the South Burlington native at 300 career points, something no lacrosse player in Castleton history had done before.

The Spartans went on to close out the game, earning the 17-7 win. Louis Alhage, Luc Leblanc, and Dillon Robinson all registered six ground balls apiece to lead the Spartans. Zach Devoid scooped five and Owen Hartman tallied five ground balls to go along with three caused turnovers. Peter Latulippe earned the win in net for the Spartans with seven saves on the night. Eric Horsfield jumped in net in the final five minutes and made one save.

Brandon Corbo led the Husson defensive effort, snagging five ground balls. James Seager, Derek Johnson, and Matt Catalano each registered a pair of caused turnovers to lead the visiting squad. Eric Lund took the loss for the Eagles, making 11 saves on the evening.

Zach Davidson's 300 career points have come from a very balanced approach. The junior has scored 154 goals and has found teammates for assists 146 times in his three years. If the Spartan attacker keeps up his torrid pace for the rest of this season and the next, he could become just the third college lacrosse player to register 400 career points.

Castleton will host the NAC Championship on Friday, May 2 at Spartan Stadium. Depending on their opponent, game time is still to be announced.
