A Day Late, Kean Advances to Skyline Champs

from press release

UNION, N.J. – The Kean University men's lacrosse team jumped started the offense from the opening whistle as they advanced in the Skyline Tournament semifinal round by defeating Farmingdale State College, 15-7, Thursday evening.

With just single digits off the clock, the Cougars (16-2) combination of Mike Criscitello, Richard Cheifitz and Matt Speciale netted the first goal of the day to jump out to an early 1-0 lead. The combo worked so well, they did it again 11 seconds later, as Speciale (pictured left) registered his second straight goal just seconds into the contest. The offense kept clicking, taking a 4-0 advantage with tallies from Criscitello and Anthony Perrotta and just three minutes off the game clock. The Cougars pushed the lead out to 6-0 before Farmingdale (8-6) found the back of the net with time expiring in the first quarter to erase the shutout.

The early portion of the second quarter belonged to Kean as the Cougars worked their way to an 11-2 lead. Cheifitz recorded two goals in the quarter before the Rams ended the quarter on a two goal run to enter the break trailing 11-4. In a low scoring third quarter, the Rams slowly crept back into the game with two single goals, trailing now 11-6.

Kean put the game out of reach, allowing just one goal in the final 15 minutes, while providing four goals of their own to walk away with a 15-7 victory.

With today's win, the Cougars set a new single-season standard for wins in a season with 16, besting the mark of 15 set just a season ago.

Senior Dino Vitale stopped 16 shots in the win while keeper Nicholas Fasano made 12 saves in the loss.

Offensively, Cheifitz led the way with three goals and three assists while Speciale finished with three goals and one assist. Criscitello added 10 face-off wins in addition to two goals and seven groundballs.

Philip Schaefer netted two goals for Farmingdale.

Kean advances to the Skyline Tournament Championship game where they will face rival Montclair State on Saturday at Sprague Field at 1 p.m.
