Adrian Wins the MIAA Again

ADRIAN, Mich. – Adrian College met Albion College Saturday afternoon for the MIAA Championship. The Bulldogs looked to repeat as MIAA tournament champions as they met the Britons in a rematch of the 2013 final. The Bulldogs fell behind early to the Britons before coming back in the second half to win a close one-goal battle, 9-8. This win advances the Bulldogs record to 13-3 and secures the automatic bid into the NCAA tournament that is set to begin Wednesday, May 7.

Albion jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the Bulldogs found the back of the net at the 9:04 mark of the first as Brendan Harvey scored unassisted. Albion would score once more in the first to take a 3-1 lead into the second quarter. Albion would extend their lead in the second as they scored the first goal to leave the score at 4-1 before Doug Boyd scored unassisted at the 14:32 mark. Albion would, once again answer but Adrian scored the final two goals of the half as Mitch Burgin scored from Harvey then followed with his second goal unassisted as Adrian trailed at the half, 5-4.

Adrian would start the second half strong as Eric Fannell scored twice and Mitch Burgin scored his third of the game from Tom Thielman to give the Bulldogs the lead, 7-5 with 3:12 left in the third. Albion would score once more before the end of the third quarter to leave the score at 7-6. The Bulldogs would maintain this lead in the fourth as A.J. Smith scored unassisted at the 14:21 mark. Albion would then tie the game as they scored two straight goals as the teams saw a tie score, 8-8, with 10:40 left in the game. Eric Fannell then tallied the game-winner at the 9:09 mark and secured the Bulldogs second straight MIAA tournament title. The Bulldogs would hold the Britons scoreless for the remainder of play as Adrian won, 9-8.

Mitch Burgin scored three goals, tallied four ground balls and caused three turnovers. Eric Fannell scored three goals and totaled four ground balls.

Kevin Lerg (12-3) earned the victory in goal for the Bulldogs as he made 11 saves and recorded two ground balls.

The Bulldogs will see action again the NCAA tournament that is set to begin Wednesday, May 7. The selection show that will determine the Bulldogs opponent and location will be held Sunday, May 4.
