BYU Bounces Boise State in Opener
from press release
PROVO, Utah — The No. 3 BYU Lacrosse team (1-0) defeated Boise State (0-1) 14-5 in its season opener. BYU came out strong during the first quarter scoring six goals and holding Boise State to zero.
Three of the goals in the first quarter were scored by sophomore Mike Fabrizio. Fabrizio finished the game scoring four goals for the Cougars.
Fabrizio believes the teams fast start was a great way to begin the season and was pleased with how the team performed.
"We got off to a really great start as a team," Fabrizio said. "We are a young team and this is the first time we have come together but we looked pretty good."
The Cougars continued to play a dominant second quarter and scored two more goals. Goalie Rob Ostler played particularly strong during this quarter, turning away several opportunities and holding Boise State to one goal.
Even though BYU was leading 10-1 at halftime, Boise State was not ready to give up and played a strong second half.
During the fourth quarter, Boise State scored three goals and kept the Cougars fighting until the end.
BYU head coach Matt Schneck was pleased with the way the Cougars started the game and happy that every member of the team had an opportunity to play, but recognizes that there were a few things that need to be corrected before their next set of games in Las Vegas.
"We have been working hard on certain elements of the game that as a coaching staff we were extremely proud to see the team execute tonight," Schneck said. "We also learned some things about our team tonight that we'll be focusing on next week as we prepare for a challenging road trip to Vegas where we will play 3 games in 3 days."
Boise State head coach Paul Rocchio is proud with how his team progressed throughout the game and acknowledges that BYU is a great team to play.
"There was improvement throughout the four quarters," Rocchio said. "We are young team and still need to grow, but we are getting closer. BYU is a great team year in and year out."
The Cougars will have a week to rest before traveling to Las Vegas February 21-23 and playing three games in three days.
