Simon Fraser Surges Psat Oregon State

from press release

BURNABY, B.C. – No. 21 Simon Fraser improved their early season record to 2-0 with an 11-8 come-from-behind win over Oregon State. Senior attackmen Eric Ransom (Sherwood Park, AB / Bev Facey HS) – 2g, 3a and Colton Dow (Coquitlam, BC / Heritage Woods Secondary) – 3g, 1a shared the lead across all offensive categories with 5 and 4 points respectively, while the Clan got two timely goals from sophomore midfielder Casey Foster (Edmonton, AB / St. Francis Xavier) to earn their second straight victory in back-to-back home contests to open the 2013 season.

Despite the Clan holding a slight edge in time of possession through much of the first quarter, a stingy Oregon State defense combined with strong goaltending by OSU sophomore backstop Nick Widmer (Canby, OR / Canby HS), would hold SFU off the board over the opening 15:00 minutes, allowing the Beavers to take a 2-0 lead on consecutive goals by Ryan Squires (West Linn, OR / West Linn HS), as the senior attackman converted passes from Jannsen Levin (Beaverton, OR / Jesuit HS) and Reed Oliver (Lake Oswego, OR / Lake Oswego HS).

Foster would score his first of the day to open the second quarter. The Clan would then have the impending equalizer called back on an apparent off-side, before Dow scored in repetition to string together a three-goal run that gave SFU their first lead at 3-2. The Fraser advantage would be short-lived with the rest of the half belonging to Oregon State, as the Beavers put the Clan on their heels with a four-goal flurry to end the half and sit atop by a score of 6-3 at the intermission.

It would not take Simon Fraser long to regain their footing out of the break as sophomore midfielder Sam Clare (Ladner, BC / Vancouver College) scored off the first face-off of the second half to close the gap to 6-4. OSU midfielder Jannsen Levin would answer back for the Beavers, momentary stalling the SFU momentum, until five unanswered goals erased the first half deficit and surged the Clan ahead 9-7 heading into the final quarter.

It would continue to be all SFU to start the fourth, as another two unanswered goals would complete a 7-0 second half run for the Clan to increase the Fraser lead to four at 11-7 with just under 4:00 minutes left to play. The Beavers would take exception following the Clan's final marker but it would be an undisciplined response to some pushing and shoving that would put the Clan man-down with the Beavers awarded a 5 versus 4 non-releasable advantage for 3:00 of the games remaining 4:00 minutes. Sophomore attackman Ben Dill (Portland, OR / Sunset HS) would capitalize for OSU on the man-up to close the score to 11-8 but Simon Fraser would be able to shut the door the rest of the way to claim the cross-Divisional contest and move to 2-0 on the season.

The No. 21 ranked Clan will not have long to rest on their laurels as they embark on their first road trip of 2013 for weekday games versus No. 8 Oregon on Wednesday, February 13, followed by No. 25 Chico State on Friday, February 15 in what will be SFU's first games versus ranked opponents this season. Oregon State will be back in action next weekend as they travel to the UCLA campus in Los Angeles, California for the annual PAC12 Shootout where they will face No. 14 Stanford on Saturday, February 16 and Utah on Sunday, February 17.
