Vermont improves to 4-3 on the year and has won two straight. California falls to 4-5 on the season.
"I was pleased with the total team effort we displayed today," said Vermont head coach Jen Johnson. "We never trailed in the game, we did have some lapses, but we never let Cal take the lead and I think that is a sign of our growing poise and confidence."
"One of the keys to the game was the way we fought hard re-defending. We would have a scoring opportunity and a shot would go wide and when Cal took possession of the ball and we did a good job battling back and defending them to get possession back. We put together a decent 60-minute effort intensity wise and the work rate was very good for the entire game," continued Johnson.
Vermont rattled off five consecutive goals on its first five shots to take a 5-0 lead six minutes into the contest. California cut the lead to two with three straight tallies of its own, including a pair by Tara Arolla. UVM added three more goals and took an 8-6 advantage into the break.
The Golden Bears climbed back within one, 10-9, on a free position goal by Vail Horn 9:46 into the second half. The Catamounts answered with four straight goals, beginning with an unassisted tally from Alison Haigh (Northborough, Mass.) at the 12:09 mark and capped by a goal from Samantha Stern (Cherry Hills, N.J.) at the 18:19 mark, to stretch the lead to five, 14-9. California would score two of the last three goals of the game, but could not overtake UVM.
Millar finished the game with three goals and three assists. Allison Pfohl (Niskayuna, N.Y.), Stern and Sarah DeStefano (Eliot, Maine) added two goals each. The Catamounts out shot California 35-26 in the game.
Catie O'Mahoney led the Golden Bears with three goals and Sam Price added four assists.
Olivia Hatfield made six stops in the Vermont net, while Morgan Dyson and Allie Shropshire combined to make 12 saves for the Golden Bears.
Vermont closes out its West Coast swing with a 2-1 record. The Catamounts return East to open up America East Conference action on Saturday (March 21-12 p.m.) at Binghamton. UVM will also face LeMoyne in Syracuse, N.Y. on Sunday (March 22-2 p.m.) in the two-game weekend.
GAME NOTES: Kristen Millar extends her consecutive points streak to 54 straight games, the second longest streak in the nation. Lindsay Hegarty scored her first career goal as a Catamount in UVM's win over UC Davis on Wednesday. Hegarty transferred to Vermont after one season at UMass.
