Rowan, Filippelli Earn Big East Honors

from press release

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Syracuse women's lacrosse senior attack Katie Rowan has been named the Big East Offensive Player of the Week, while Loyola sophomore midfield Cara Filippelli has been named the Big East Defensive Player of the Week.

Rowan had five goals, five assists and factored in 10 of Syracuse's 13 goals in a 13-8 conference win over Connecticut on Mar. 14. That performance also moved Rowan into the top spot on the league's all-time scoring list. She has totaled 97 points in 16 career conference games. She also recorded the 200th goal of her career to become the 34th Division I player to accomplish the feat. It was the sixth double-figure scoring game of her career. Rowan leads the league with 34 points as has amassed 23 goals and 11 assists.

Filippelli helped the Greyhounds defense hold Davidson to just three goals in a 20-3 victory on Mar. 15. The three goals are the fewest by a Loyola opponent since 2005. She and the team had a 34-minute scoreless stretch during the win and handed Davidson (5-3) its third loss of the season. Filippelli also had four ground balls and four caused turnovers. She is the first Loyola player to earn the honor since Apr. 14, 2008 when her sister Cara, currently an assistant coach with the Greyhounds, accomplished the feat.
