St. Bonaventure Shuts Down Canisius 6-2

from press release

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - The St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team scored the first three goals of the game and played solid defense throughout to come away with a 6-2 victory over Canisius on Tuesday afternoon at McGraw Jennings Field.

The victory is the Brown and White's third straight as they improve to 3-2 on the young season. Canisius, on the other hand, drops to 4-5 with the loss.

Leading the way for the Bonnies on the offensive end was sophomore Christine Hanley who scored three goals on the afternoon, bringing her season total up to 11. Senior Keri Vito along with freshman Danielle Drabin and Daisy Timlin completed the Brown and White's offensive attack for the day by each scoring one goal apiece.

Getting the start in net for the St. Bonaventure was junior Tori Waheibi. Waheibi played all 60 minutes, allowing just two goals while making six saves to pick up the win.

The Bonnies were actually outshot by Canisius for the game 13-10, but they held their own on the defensive end, winning the turnover battle 7-3.

The game featured a very possession oriented Canisius squad who held the ball for minutes at a time at some stages during the game without making any offensive attacks or movements. This strategy backfired on the Golden Griffs thanks to Hanley, who scored the first two goals of the game to put the Brown and White up 2-0 with 14:14 left in the first stanza.

The Golden Griffs would continue their stagnant offensive strategy despite being down 2-0 late in the first. St. Bonaventure would eventually regain possession and build its lead up to 3-0, when freshman Danielle Drabin fired home her 11th goal of the season, with just 2:29 remaining until halftime.

Canisius would come out much more aggressive in the second half firing nine shots on goal compared to the four it fired on net in the first. The Golden Griffs would actually cut the Brown and White's lead down to 5-2 after a goal by Megan Oosting with 6:11 left in the second.

Hanley, however, would step up again for the Bonnies and seal up the win for the home team by tallying her third goal of the day with just 2:28 remaining in the game to make the score 6-2 St. Bonaventure. Sarah Podlesh got the start in net for Canisius and played the entire game, making just two saves in the loss.

The Brown and White will be back in action on Saturday, March 21, when they travel to Delaware to take on Colonial Athletic Association member University of Delaware. Game time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
