Marist Cruises Past Presby for Third Straight Win

from press release

CLINTON, S.C. - The Marist women's lacrosse team won its third consecutive game, as they rolled passed Presbyterian, 21-5 on Friday afternoon on the road. With the win, the Red Foxes have tied the record for consecutive wins in program history with three. Seniors Cristin Begley (Brookville, Md.) scored four goals and added three assists, and Stephanie Garland (Long Valley, N.J.) scored five goals in the win.

Marist (5-1) opened the game by scoring the first nine goals of the contest. During the stretch which spanned the first 6:30 of the game, Begley had two goals at 29:13 and 28:33, Garland had three markers, at 27:16, a free position goal, and back-to-back goals at 26:22 and 25:21. The run was capped at the 23:30 mark as freshman Kelly Condon (Abington, Pa.) scored her first goal of the season.

A Presbyterian goal by Kristin Stenoien would interrupt the Red Foxes run; however, Marist ended the first period on a 4-0 run to take a 13-1 lead. Freshman Shannon Haas (Farmingdale, N.Y.) scored twice before halftime. One goal was unassisted and her second was assisted by Begley.

Condon scored her second goal of the game to start the second half. Two freshmen scored their first career goals in the waning stages of the game. Lauren Cobb (Jamesville, N.Y.) and Lauren Hall (Carmel, Ind.) each scored on free position shots with 4:55 and 2:48 remaining in the second half respectively.

Kelsey Thoms (Newark, N.Y.) made four saves to earn her fourth win of the season. She allowed a season-low total in goals against the Blue Hose. The Red Foxes defense caused 13 of Presbyterian's 18 turnovers, with 11 different players tallying a caused turnover in the box score.

Marist led the game in six statistical categories including shots (42-13), ground balls (32-16), draw controls (19-9), clears (13-14), free position shots (4-6) and turnovers (13-18).

The Red Foxes will continue their four-game road trip on Wednesday, March 25 as the squad opens Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play against Siena. Face-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Loudonville, N.Y.
