Devine's Career-High Leads Bucknell to Win

from press release

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Becca Devine (Arlington, Va./St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes) scored a career-high six goals, the most by a Bucknell player in five years, and the Bison used a quick start to run past Lafayette 14-11 on Saturday at Graham Field. Bucknell improved to 3-0 in Patriot League play for the first time and are now 7-2 overall.

Freshman Ryan Gribbon (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes), Devine’s former high school teammate, added two goals and three assists for a career-high five points, while Bonnie Buechel (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) and Carol Donohue (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) tallied a goal and two assists apiece.

Devine, who scored the game-winning goal with five seconds remaining in Bucknell’s 8-7 win over Binghamton on Wednesday, rejoined the starting lineup in this one and scored six goals on six shots. She had three goals this season coming into the contest.

Devine scored three straight goals in a span of only 2:42 to highlight a 6-0 Bison run to start the game. Junior Kendall Thibeault (Fallston, Md./St. Paul’s) scored her first collegiate goal with 14:09 left in the first half to give Bucknell a 6-0 lead, but Lafayette (0-9, 0-3) regrouped and outscored the Bison the rest of the way.

Maria Drehwing finally put the Leopards on the board with 12:15 left in the half, but Lafayette scored four more times in the final eight minutes to pull within 10-5 at intermission.

Bucknell scored four of the first six goals of the second half, culminating with Devine’s sixth goal of the day off a Gribbon feed with 20:14 to play. That gave the Bison a seemingly commanding 14-7 lead, but it would be their final tally of the day.

Emily Archibald, who scored all five of her goals on strong one-on-one moves, helped bring Lafayette back in the game. Her tumbling goal just in front of the crease at the 7:50 mark made it 14-9, then Lauren Curley scored on a free-position shot just 34 seconds later to pull the Leopards within 14-10.

Lafayette won yet another draw, and Archibald scored again to make it 14-11 with 6:14 left, and the Bison fans began to get a bit nervous. The Leopards quickly regained possession and had a chance to draw closer when leading scorer Lauren Brown was awarded a free-position attempt, but this time Alyssa DeLorenz (Garland, Texas/Plano East) made the save, her ninth of the game, with 5:41 remaining.

Bucknell cleared and played keep-away for about four minutes before Lafayette came up with a steal. But the Leopards turned it back over on the clear, and the Bison ran out the clock.

Julia Braun (Tomkins Cove, N.Y./North Rockland) had another strong game for Bucknell with two goals, five draw controls, two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Michelle Milot (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) also had a multi-point game with a pair of assists.

Buechel and Jenna Lotkowictz (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) both collected a team-high four ground balls, while Lotkowictz led the team with three forced turnovers.

Devine’s six goals were the most by a Bucknell player since Andrea Paraud had six against Denver on Apr. 3, 2004.

Bucknell outshot Lafayette 25-24 and held the ground ball edge 18-15. Both teams had 20 turnovers.

Alexa Biale went the distance in goal for Lafayette and finished with six saves.
