McGarvie Sparks Princeton to Win at UVA

from press release

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Senior Holly McGarvie had a five-point
game, scoring three goals and picking up two assists, as the No. 9 Princeton
women's lacrosse team upset No. 7 Virginia, 8-7, on Saturday, March 21 at
Klockner Stadium.

Virginia's Whitaker Hagerman opened the game scoring 48 seconds into the
game with help from Ashley McCulloch, but Princeton responded with three
unanswered goals in a span of 4:55 to take a 3-1 lead. McGarvie assisted on
the first two goals, helping sophomore Lizzy Drumm even the game at 25:38,
before passing to senior Kristin Schwab from behind the cage to give the
Tigers the lead at 23:17. McGarvie tallied her first when she ran around the
back of the cage and fired the ball into the top shelf at 20:43.

Hagerman scored her second of the afternoon at 13:59 to cut the Cavaliers
deficit back to one goal. Blair Weymouth passed to Hagerman inside the arc
and Hagerman found space to score.

Princeton went up 5-2 when McGarvie and Schwab scored within 30 seconds of
each other. McGarvie tallied an unassisted goal at 10:51 during which
Virginia's defender Liz Downs was called for a yellow card. Junior Jenna
Washabaugh won the next draw control and Princeton easily made its way to
the net without Virginia's top defender in its path, and Schwab rocketed a
high shot into the back of the net at 10:21.

Virginia called a timeout to regroup. The team entered the field more
relaxed and patient as it won the next draw control and held position for
more than four minutes, looking for the perfect shot. The Princeton defense
was solid not allowing Virginia any open looks, as three shots sailed wide
before Weymouth was able to sneak one by sophomore goalie Erin Tochihara at
5:08. Weymouth rolled into the center of the field and sent a shot through
traffic for the goal. A free-position goal by Weymouth at 3:48 made it a 5-4

Tochihara kept the Tigers in front when she made a big save on a Jenny
Hauser shot, after Virginia won the next draw and quickly made its way down
the field. Hauser wheeled around from behind the cage and Tochihara came up
with the stop.

A minute later, Kaitlin Duff was the recipient of the team's second yellow
card of the afternoon and teammate Downs received a major foul, setting up
McGarvie for a free-position goal, her third goal of the day, with 1:55 to
play in the first half.

Tochihara helped maintain the Tigers' 6-4 lead at the break when she stopped
a Julie Gardner shot with 12 seconds left.

Brittany Kalkstein scored two goals in the first 1:49 of the second half to
tie the game at 6-6.

Princeton won the next three draw controls to get back out ahead of
Virginia. Junior Kristin Morrison regained the lead for Princeton when she
connected with Drumm at 26:40, and senior Christine Casaceli sent in a low
shot to make it 8-6 at 24:40.

The nets stayed still for almost 14 minutes, as Benner stopped a
free-position chance by Drumm and a shot by Schwab. Weymouth and Hagerman
both hit the post on the opposite end of the field. At 10:34 Virginia net
its seventh goal when McCulloch connected with Duff.

Tochihara made two more saves in the final 10:34, including a shot with 18
seconds to play to hold for the win. She finished the game with seven saves,
while Benner had eight.

Princeton had an 11-6 advantage in draw controls, while Virginia led in
ground balls, 14-11 and shots 20-16.

The Tigers improve to 5-1 on the season, and now lead the all-time series
with Virginia, 14-13, while the Cavaliers fall to 6-3.
