Fairfield Opens MAAC Play with Win

The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team used a strong second-half effort to pull away for a 15-7 win over host Iona College in Friday afternoons Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Lacrosse League season opener for both squads. The Stags improve to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in MAAC play, while the Gaels fall to 2-7 on the year and 0-1 in league play.

The Stags took an early 2-0 lead as Erin Rigby and Abbey Goodwin scored goals in the first 42 seconds of the game. Iona rebounded, scoring the next three goals, taking a 3-2 lead with 9:14 to play in the first-half. Fairfield found its offense in the final minutes of the first-half, scoring four goals in a 79 seconds span beginning with 4:17 to play in the half and ending with a Rebecca White tally with 2:58 to play in the period. Iona would score the final tally of the half, with 79 seconds to play and Fairfield took a 6-4 lead into the intermission.

The teams exchanged goals to start the second half, with Kristen Coleman touching net for the Stags at the 22:21 mark and Kerry Thompson at 21:49. Rigby and White scored at 18:24 and 16:40 to five Fairfield a 9-5 edge, but Iona cut the led to three at the 15:23 mark. The Stags scored four unanswered goals at that point, and six of the final seven tallies, to secure the win.

Coleman had a game-high five points, with two goals and three assists, to lead the Stags offense. She also added two draw controls and two caused turnovers. Rigby had three goals and an assist, while White had three tallies.

Fairfield held a 41-30 advantage in ground balls, thanks in large part to the seven ground ball efforts of Renee L'Heureux and Kim Fuchs. The Stags were nearly perfect clearing the ball, going 16-17 and were 2-7 on free position shots. Fairfield had 13 draw controls with White and Amy Kelleher joining Coleman with a team-high three.

The Stags continue MAAC play on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Manhattan.
