Martino Scores Five as St. Joe's Routs Temple

from press release

PHILADELPHIA --The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team used relentless pressure defense and pinpoint offense to defeat Temple, 15-6, at Finnesey Field on Friday afternoon. The Hawks received three-point days from five different players, most notably Jenna Martino who tallied five.

After the two teams traded goals early, Saint Joseph's (5-5, 1-0 Atlantic 10) used a 12-1 run to put the game away in the first half.

Grace Dinn began the 15-goal outburst just 90 seconds into the game off a Julie Mineweaser assist. A Temple (0-8, 0-1 Atlantic 10) goal by Jacqueline Mercer came at 26:24 and from there on out it was all Saint Joseph's.

Martino and Mineweaser each netted two goals while Meghan McDevitt added another during a 5-0 run that lasted from the 24:42 mark in the first until 14:41.

TU scored again at 13:32 to go in the first, but SJU went on a 6-0 run that saw two markers by Helene Tursi. Jen Peters, McDevitt, Martino and Dinn all provided goals during that span that also saw Abby Renninger and Jessica Westlake make assists. Saint Joseph's led 12-2 at halftime.

Temple scored two quick goals out of halftime to cut the lead to eight at 12-4 with 26:34 remaining. Three goals by the trio of Tursi, Westlake and Renninger, quelled any thought of an Owl comeback and gave the Hawks their largest lead at 15-4.

The Owls added two late goals for the final 15-6 score line.

Martino's three goals and two assists topped all scorers, while Tursi had three goals and an assist for her four-point afternoon. Mineweaser, Westlake, and McDevitt had three points apiece.

Saint Joseph's dominated every facet with advantages in shots (34-13), ground balls (25-13) and draw controls (12-9). SJU committed just 14 turnovers to the Owls' 27, 20 of which were forced by the Hawks defense and led to Temple only clearing nine of 18 tries successfully.

Suzy Herlihy went the distance making three saves for the victory.

Saint Joseph's win over Temple is just the second ever over the Owls and two in a row at home against TU. SJU will host Massachusetts, who defeated La Salle, 17-2, on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Finnesey Field.
