Hoyas Drub Cincy, No. 1 in Big East

from press release

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Georgetown University Women's Lacrosse squad accomplished one of its 2009 season goals on Saturday, returning to the top of the BIG EAST Conference. The No. 7/6 Hoyas defeated Cincinnati (5-10, 0-7 BIG EAST), 18-6, to win the BIG EAST Regular Season Co-Championship and earn the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament. Georgetown completed the regular season 11-4 with a 6-1 record in the BIG EAST to tie Syracuse for the title.

The championship marks the fourth under Head Coach Ricky Fried after a one-year hiatus. The win also marks the second time in three seasons that the Hoyas will enter the tournament as the top seed.

"The team's hard work really paid off, we had a goal at the beginning of the year to win the regular season and we did. I'm proud of the team for setting their mind to something and it becoming a reality," said Fried. "We set other goals this year and now we need to refocus on those and the tournament."

Attacker Molly Ford (Reisterstown, Md./Notre Dame Prep) started things early for the Hoyas hitting two quick goals in the opening three minutes. Jacqueline Giles (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) and Ashby Kaestner (Trappe, Md./Saints Peter and Paul) both added scores to give GU a 4-0 lead.

The Bearcats got on the board at 22:34, but Georgetown quickly answered as Erin Lovett (Wantagh, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) and Ford both found the back of the cage to make it 6-1.

Cincinnati staged a two-goal run with goals just a minute apart, but that would be the end of the scoring for the Bearcats after a timeout from Fried.
