Monmouth Women Unveil 2011 Captains

from press release

- Rising juniors Carissa Franzi (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex), Allison Geoghan (Highland, Md./River Hill) and Kirby Mundorf (Catonsville, Md./Seton Keogh) have been chosen to serve as lacrosse team captains for the 2010-11 season, Monmouth head lacrosse coach Denise Wescott announced on Friday.

"I'm excited to have these three as captains," said Wescott. "They will do a great job bridging the team and the coaches together. They are dedicated players that will work hard to help us fight for 1st place in the NEC next year. Carissa, Allison and Kirby will help help unify the team more so we can work a little better together on and off the field."

Franzi is coming off her finest season with the Hawks, one which saw her rewarded with a Second Team All-Northeast Conference nod. While not MU's top offensive threat last season, she led the team in caused turnovers, was second on draw controls and ground balls. Franzi also contributed with 19 points coming on four assists and 15 goals, including one game-winning marker. She was one of two Hawks named to the 2010 Northeast Conference All-Tournament team.

"Carissa is a workhorse," said Wescott. "She gives us everything she has every day, every play, every ball. She will set the pace for us. She was our most consistent player through the season this year."

Like Franzi, Geoghan was a second team all-conference selection for the first time in 2010. As Monmouth's top defender, the River Hill prep star had the challenging task of marking up the opposition's top offensive threat on a game by game basis. Geoghan helped anchor a defense that allowed the fourth lowest goals against average in the conference. Individually she recorded 16 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers in her junior campaign.

"Allison is an extremely smart player who hates to get beat, and hates to lose," said Wescott. She is one of our best line defenders and often has duties marking our opponent's best attackers. In addition she has great footwork and is aggressive. I'm sure her feedback to the team will help us make better decisions on the field."

Mundorf started every game in net for the Hawks in 2010; making 153 saves for the Blue & White. Her 10.22 goals against average was fourth in the conference while she led the Hawks with 51 ground balls. For her 11 save effort in the NEC Semifinals, Mundorf was named to the All-Tournament team.

"Kirby has made great strides to take over the crease this year and make a name for herself," said Wescott. "Her game and confidence has really improved and I know we are glad she has another year in goal."

The Hawks finished the season with a 9-9 record and qualified for a league record 13th consecutive Northeast Conference Lacrosse Tournament.
